Lilliput turns on without any power.....WTF!

I am not even sure how to search for this so I am not even going to try...

I had never noticed this before, but when I was putting my lilliput back in the car, I plugged the VGA cable first, then plugged the USB looking thing next, and before I had a chance to plug the power cable in, the lilliput turned on.....

Can't figure it out. The monitor seems to somehow get its power from the carputer because it shuts off when carputer is off. The only other thing I have connected on the other end is my backup camera to the Video-1 line. But even that gets power from back-up lights only when ignition is on and car is in reverse. The monitor works fine, with or without the power cord attached....!

I am guessing an internal short in the USB looking thing cable. Anyone else with this "problem"?

    Now that's strange...

The VGA/TS cables carry no power (or at least not enough to power the screen itself ), so it's gotta be coming in from the cable, since you can power it from there if you use the black power plug that it comes with, so the pins obviously have to be there (and in the connector on the board). Having looked at that damn picture all weekend long from digitalww's site (http://www.digitalww.com/Lilliput_to...ideo_diag.jpg), I can see how a short inside the cable itself is more likely, but I don't know if that connection on top of video 2 is for power... could short out easily if that is since the solder points are so close, I guess.

Well, that "looks like a USB" port is not actually utilized for a connection that use a USB interface. So I don't think 5V exists there.

However, I agree. It's weird. There's probably 12V on the "USB look like" cable. Have you used your meter to find out?

Correct. The "real" USB connection is in the main cable, and it splits to the controller inside the casing. The rca cable that goes to the "pseudo-usb" connector does carry the 12v if you use the AC adapter. A short there could (and obviously does, in this case) power the screen.

Thanks for all responses. My monitor hooked up as following: Just as if using the AC adaptor, 12-v power from the carputer PSU is fed into the "pseudo-usb" connector cable on the side where the RCA connectors are (but not to the RCAs of course!). Then, the "pseudo-usb" end is plugged in to the monitor. Assuming there is a short in the cable, which makes one of the pins on the "pseudo-usb" connector hot, why would that hot pin power the board? Is there a connection? I have a replacement cable now and I will swap it to see what will happen.

Also, while I was handling the monitor when it was in pieces, I broke one of the little "winding" thingys in the corner marked L101. The wire on it (wihich is as thick as a strand of hair) also broke so I ended up soldering it back (I am so proud of myself!). Now I have lost default language! I programmed the monitor for english as default but some Far-East language shows up that I cannot understand. Otherwise eveything works perfectly. You think these could be related?

Wait... if you have 12V going into the side connector from the PSU, then you're supplying power to the unit, and there's no short... that's the way it's supposed to work.

But I am not connecting the power cable end on the monitor side! Just the "pseudo-usb" connector...

    You're just confusing me now...

Is there power going to that breakout cable or not?
