    Lilliput getting too hot?

After using my Lilliput with no problems at all for months outside of my car, a day after I installed it in my dash its fuse blew. I had it powered off my Opus power supply, and there was no metal nearby to short out, so I don't know what could have caused this.

I've replaced the fuse and the screen powers on again, but I've noticed that when it's on (not on standby) it emits a smell. It's not that strong smell of burning electronics, but it is definitely electrical in nature. The smell seems to come from the LCD backlight transformer. Anyone know what might be going on here? I'm a little concerned about putting this back in the car as it is, but I don't know what to do next.

Worked for months outside the car, then you changed where it was and it stopped working? My money is on something to do with the car connection. Check for bad joints, stray wire strands, nicks in the insulation, the spot where it connects to your screen, etc.

Check the FAQ Emporium for a thread on how to fix your Opus that discusses a possible short that occurs inside the unit. Perhaps that happened and for some reason the screen fuse blew.

I wouldn't worry about the backlight transformer. They get hot and if its only a mild smell, look elsewhere.

Thanks for the tip on the Opus, but I have the 90w supply, which doesn't have a cover. I have that mounted inside my PC case, and it's still working fine - the PC boots up and plays music, I just can't change anything because the screen isn't hooked up :-)

I was figuring if it was a problem with the Opus, I would have blown that fuse instead of the LCD's. I put a 5 amp fuse in line between the Opus and the Lilliput, and that didn't blow.

Well I figured out what the smell is. The paper-wound capacitor next to the LCD backlight transformer smoked when I plugged it in in the car today. I had noticed before I even put the screen into the car that this capacitor looked damaged, but it's strange that I didn't have any problems with it when I used the wall wart power plug.

Does anyone know what the value of this cap is? I'd rather just replace it than have to buy a whole new controller.

Does anyone know what this capacitor is rated for? In the attached picture, it's the silver paper capacitor immediately to the right of the LCD transformer at the top left of the board. I want to try replacing this before I get a whole new controller.
