    port20's pictures online

Here's a link to the pictures from port20's HOWTO guide. I figured some other people might want to take a look without requesting the Word document...

    port20,

Bravo again to you for the awesome work. Hope you don't mind me putting the pictures online -- lemme know if you have any objections and I'll take them down. As long as I can get a converter to work for my XBOX, a Kenwood double-din dash unit is my next purchase :-)

it works 99% the last 1% is my touch switcher

I am going to use a micro controller for it (I will explane why tomorow night) I just finished the hardware for the switcher and need to work on the firmware for it the touch interface it self works 100%

I dont have any hook up for broken kenwood screens but Im a mobile electronics installer and I know many stereo shop owners I can ask around for you and see what they got and how much they want for it I will let you know if I find anything

Ok my kenwood mod works a 100% now and the new tech doc will be ready tomorrow so email me with (Kenwood RGB Touch screen) in the subject line at port20@socal.rr.com if you want the new info

please disreguard the old file it has some inaccurate info in it

if you want to do the touch panel mod you are going to need a lot of skill with SMD electronics and a very steady hand to do it it's very hard to solder the wires with out screwing up the circuit board or shorting it out and you also need to be good routing the wires so they don't jam the screen when it opens and closes it is a really tight fit I had to make a wire guide from some aluminum tube from the hobby shop so the wires would stay away from the gears and motor

I estimate that this mod will take most people one hour to take the head unit apart and plan what needs to done and another 5-6 hours to complete the mod after buying all the parts

I said I am going to use a micro controller for the rgb switcher in my last post

the reason is that I make a video bypass unit for Alpine multi media head units and I was thinking it would be easy to use the circuit board for it to control the switcher relay with a button on the kenwood head unit

so I cut the play/pause button loose from the board on my kenwood that function is also on the touch screen on my DDX 7015 so I don't really need the button any way

I want to use this button to switch the touch panel between the kenwood and the pc but it's a momontary switch so I needed to connect it to the micro controller witch is now controlling the relay that is switching the touch panel between the pc and the kenwood head unit

I have it setup so that when you push the play/pause button it switches the touch panel to the pc

push it again and it switches back to the kenwood there is no need for a seperate latching switch on the dash to switch the touch panel

I am also planning to use the play/pause button to manualy control my startup shutdown controller that I made

I was thinking that I can make it so if you push the button 5 times very quickly it could keep the pc on for 20 min's after the car shuts off to send files to the pc over wifi and then shutdown the pc after 20 min's or it could do anything else I can think of with the shutdown controller

Any way I have 9 hours total testing the Kenwood RGB touch screen mod and it works perfectly

now I got to get a new pc for my car and I need to make some cash to buy the parts

so if anyone wants to do this mod and doesn't have the skills needed to do it

I will do it for you for $450 plus parts this price includes express return shipping worldwide it will take two weeks to do the work and ship it back to you

if anyone it interested email me with (kenwood mod) in the subject line

also if anyone wants to use a button on there kenwood for the rgb switcher and needs a controller for it i will sell you one for $50 shipped if you want one email me with (rgb switcher) in the subject line

port20, one thing I dont think you explored...

you mention that the kenwood quality on VGA signal is slightly worse than a xenarc for extended reading periods. However, how is the readability in direct sunlight?

how is the readability in direct sunlight?

one word ****ty but all resistive touch screens are

in terms of brightness the kenwood is 400 mcd the same as Xanarc with backlight upgrade

the resistive touch panel is the cause they only transfer about 82% of the light from the lcd the PET material that makes them work blocks the light and causes the glare you see on the screen

if you get rid of the touch panel readabillity will increse by 50% and brightness by 20%

SAW and IR touch panels are much better they transfer about 95% of the light and there is a lot less glare it's only about 10% a resistive panels glare

I see you are running a Pentium M what MB are you using and are you happy with it?

I was thinking of buying a Commell LV-673

i'm using this barebone system, i like it very much... no hitches, VERY well built chassis, very well thought design....

(my opus sits outside, but i'mgonna get a dsatx or something smaller to fit in the case)

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=A457-6006

(I didnt buy it from there, but they have good pics, newegg has more pics)

As for the display that is a big letdown... I was under the impression that these displays were MUCH better in terms of daylight readability.... I was going to get one solely for carpc usage, but if the performance isnt up to it, then I guess i'll hold out... isnt the nav display good quality in day-time sunlight conditions though? I saw some alpine displays that perfromed pretty well in the daylight (???)
