Thanatos.
So, yes, this is my first post, but I've been surfing and searching as I plan my carputer. Haven't been able to find an answer on this one yet.
Has anyone had any luck on using any sort of PCI graphics card and outputting at 800x480? I would like to do this rather than use an integrated graphics solution, as I would like a little more power behind my graphics than IGP provides.
Any thoughts on what cards would work for this, as well as if this is actually a viable solution, or should I just stick to IGP?
Thanks
Dave

Well I purchased an FX5200 128 meg PCI card to up the graphics performance. The goal was to make visuals and Nintendo 64 games run better. Not a big difference from what I saw.
If you do go with a card, plan on spending 100+ bucks. I went the cheap route and went with a 64bit card (60 bucks) did not see that much of a gain in performance.

Thanks, Thanatos, but I am talking 800x480 with a PCI card, not IGP (which, by the way, stands for Integrated Graphics Processor, which you referred to as "build-in video, and not AGP, which is a type of bus, along the lines of PCI, or PCI-X.)
But hey, thanks for telling me to search. I didn't think of that...
On the other hand, -zip-, I appreciate the help and the experience you had. The only worry I have is the extra heat from a card (assuming I can get one to output 800x480). And of course, actually finding a PCI card, as they are getting a bit rarer these days. I assume you were able to get it to output 800x480 with powerstrip?
Dave
I know what IGP and AGP stands for so you don't have to explain me.
Plus if you search like you said you know what external video cards can output 800x480 so like I saidn00b and don't came here given crap to people that is replying to you post (that BTW every F week is a n00b with the same F question).
This shows a lot about what you know about it and the hard that you search the forums. The only worry I have is the extra heat from a card (assuming I can get one to output 800x480
Thanatos.
On every forum, there's always that one guy that thinks he's a king because he has been on a forum a long time, and that he is "kewl" because he can tell "n00b's" things and act superior to them. Thats fine, go ahead and be proud of yourself. I hope it makes you feel good.
You obviously didn't know what IGP versus AGP meant, as in your original post (before you edited it after seeing other replies) you assumed that IGP was some type of system bus.
And, yes, I have searched for heat issues, and the extra heat a video card puts out as compared to IGP is certainly an issue, as is every extra little bit of heat put out by any piece of equipment. I doubt it will be a problem, although I haven't seen anything that confirms it either way.
Lastly, if all you are going to do is reply to tell me to search, or that I'm a "n00b", don't bother. Utilize your efforts in a more contructive way, or don't bother at all.
Dave
Oh, and here, I'll quote your original, unedited message, in case you forgot:

Also I think you mean build-in video cus I guess you know that there are IGP cards way more powerful than the regular PCI (no express)
Thanatos.
So I guess you n00b read "quest for 800x480" and didn't find no even one video card that can output that res with PS help??
And yes I thought you were talking about AGP because every week you get the dumb n00b asking the same, that is why I edited my post (that is why the edit button is for) but that was way before you came here today (you actually received email notifications cus I was here all night and you dind't check you thread)
You say you search but if you did you'll know that there is people running more than a video card in SYS like VIA and P4 ITX and no problems with heat (at least from that pice of HW) so like I said you full of it.
Oh and BTW don't come here with the "you think you better than anyone..." or "you think your cool calling people N00b...." cus that is lame, look for another excuse to justify your BS.
Thanatos.
I bow down to your superiority. Thank you for your help, have a nice day.
Heat is no issue at all, did not try 800x480 as my skins are all 800x600 but it is possible to do it with powerstrip and an FX5200.

Thanks, -zip-, the only reason I am worried about heat, is that I will be putting it in a rear corner of my trunk, and enclosing it in in some sort of plastic/fiberglass/wood enclosure. There is a vent there, though, that exits the car; if necessary, I can put a small fan there, powered off the carputer power, which should eliminate any heat buildup problems.
