    Post HEADS UP DISPLAY!

Have you guys had any experience with using a heads up display vs. a TFT or LCD for your mp3 player? I found a cheap Heads up Display on eBay. here's the link

Also, Kenwood sells a head unit w/mp3 (cd) capabilities with an available heads up display unit. It's definitely safer on the road. I have a 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero) and the stereo console is so far down the dash that you can make a fatal mistake bending down to change the station. A steering wheel remote and a heads up display definitely should do the trick.

I must say that's interesting. I'd like to see stats on the Kenwood deck though if you can kick me a URL. I'd love to get a view of how it works.

Now then, on the other, I'm not sure what it's excuse is. Really I'd hit google.com with "GM Hughes DataVision" and see if by chance you can find some company specs/info before even thinking about it. In car HUD systems I will say this. The display is on the windshield. Yes, I know you knew this, but that's one expencive as heck windshield. Automotive HUD displays that display on the windshield need a special layer embeded within it (the windshield that is) else you will not be able to see anything what so ever.

Thus why I'd like to see the Kenwood one. Unless they provide a clear stick on sheet of plastic, I'm not sure how it would display. Be very nice to know.

    Here's the Kenwood MP3/CD head unit:KDC-MP8017
It can be found on eBay for about $250, but I think any Kenwood receiver w/the D MASK system can use the Heads up Display.
The Kenwood Heads up Display unit can be found at Crutchfield: KPA-HD100
It's pretty expensive, but it lists track info and keeps your eyes on the road. Not for everyone, but definitely something to think about.

Yes, that is expencive for all you get, but it does work how I figured. Since it can not display on the windshield (lack of coating) it uses a peice of plastic with the coating on it. I'll have to check into automotive HUD more later as from what I'm thinking, it may be possible to make one of those really bright 4x40 LCD text boxes into one, provided the windshield can soak in the color of the LCD and not pass it through as glass does.

    Food for thought...

It's a small projector that dislpays on your winshield, but like DarkWolf says, you'd need a special layered piece of glass probably attached to your windshield so the image doesn't shoot right through your windshield. And yes, it is monochrome, but it just the same as having a red 4 line lcd. And like DarkWolf says, you'd probably want to do more research before you picked something like this up. I just brought it up on this discussion board because I haven't seen anyone else even mention heads up displays.

Has anyone e-mailed the seller? How much would the special plastic cost??? It has a vga input, should work with regular video cards. Would windows or winamp need any special display mode to run this???

I've come to find that gaining info about this unit is very hard. However this is what I could find, just scan the pages for "Datavision", "HUD" or "Heads-Up"..

    http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/departm...s013030251.htm
    http://www.xde.net/docs/DemoContent/pdfit/016.pdf (Need acrobat to view)

http://www.google.com/search?q=cache...sion+HUD&hl=en (Hope that works, it's a huge PFD, so this is the txt version)
    http://www.cs.cmu.edu/People/hkundra...seI/report.pdf (If it doesn't work)

Hat's off to CMU as usual for being full of nuts techies. Best thing about this state, alot of good things come from projects there..
http://www.menet.umn.edu/~coco/Lab/R.../Hardware.html (A good page for info on how it works and such)

Hope this info helped. Seems it needs a "semitransparent combiner" to display, thus, a peice of plastic. I'm not sure on anything else. You should contact the seller to find out what all is included and if everything is there.

BTW, I checked Delco's site and couldn't find anything about it. Seems to be an outdated model that is no longer made. I did however find this..
