8 inch Widescreen LCD in double Din

OK, i have read the forums and most people say you can't fit an 8 inch screen in a double din slot, But am i about to prove them all wrong ?

Well, i'm not sure , but i have been doing some measuring and have found that a WIDESCREEN 8 inch may fit. Most people seems to be talking about 4:3 screen and yes they are too tall to fit. But the visible screen area ( if i have it correct) for a 8 inch WIDESCREEN is exactly the same size as the front of a double din unit 7" x 4", so it looks like a screen will fit behind the opening for the Double din unit if the plastic casing is removed from the screen and if there is room for the curcuit boards to over lap the edges. if you get the idea.

well yes, the only way is if you have enough border around your double din to house the est of the LCD frame. you need to know exactly how much border there is around the visable part of the screen.

Sama may be able to help you with this as he has fabbed one into his Bimmer.

have you taken apart the dash yet to measure how much room you have avaliable?

might want to do that first before you go any further

just because it looks like it will work from the front doesn't mean jack until you take the dash apart and see if you have enough width for the shroud/casing of the screen

Yes the dash has been taken apart, there is boat loads of room there as its a Mitsubishi Delica 4x4. I should also be able to keep the PC behind the Dash too.
Just knocked up another Diagram to test the idea, seems it will work with CTF800 screen from CarTFT. I will need a border of 8 mm at the top and bottom and about 5 mm on the edges of the screen, The visible part of the screen seems to be of set by about 2 mm to the right. Its all looking OK but i can't be sure as i don't have the screen here, I'm just going by Sama's post and from his measurements and the specs at CarTFT's Site.

I think if i do this , it will make a real nice install and look factory fitted as there looks like there will be no need to chop the dash around at All. But we will see.

it will be close. but possible. make sure you have enough room for securing brackets. that drinks holder might have some clips etc that get in the way.

The drinks holder just come out with two screws and is in a sort of tube, so i don't think it will be a problem.

The only problem i can see is fitting the circuit boards behind the screen as they look like they are wider than the double din hole and the delica has a frame the the radio slides into. so i may have to make some small extensions leads for the board and mount it down the dept of the double din hole and not flat behind the screen. You can just see what i mean with these pictures.

is that the only 8" wide touchscreen w/vga input?

you probably don't need this info as you've already come to the conclusion that the screen will fit, but just in case it can tell you something...

srctrc's bezel on www.mybimmer.net for the E39 is a double din adaptor for a 7" screen. My E39 fits the 8" as you have seen. And since a double DIN fits in that gap, then then 8" widrescreen should fit in a double din space.
