What would you like to see in a motorized screen solution?

I was just thinking maybe I would try and be a little proactive in trying to make a list of the things people want in a motorized screen, in hopes that it will bring a compiled list of our demands, and hopefully help us get a quicker realistic solution for a good motorized screen.

What would be the most important to the community in the way of features that we would want or feel are requirements to make a realistically usable display?

If this is something everyone wants to participate in, I will try and compile the most prevalent features into a poll and let people post which features seem to be more important in a graphical representation.

For me one thing is clear there really isn’t a practical do it all devise (which is understandable being the relative infancy of the devises)

And I know these would be a very daunting task to fit all this into one package, but I am just thinking out loud.

For me the important features are a solid reliable unit for one.
I would really like it to be motorized and still be capable of holding a slim slot drive in the front. This would also enable, if designed correctly, to hold a graphical readout stating basic text information like id3 tags and media info.

I would like to have well thought out buttons on the front of the unit that can be hot linked to frontends that enable basic controls i.e. volume track play pause while the screen is folded in.

Despite how much people say they want independent hardware for amplification, I know for me I wouldn’t mind having standard amplified channels included.

I would like a standard sized usb 2.0 and firewire port on the face

Would like to see a extra integrated button that can be wired in to control power on/off function

Obviously a usable AM FM solution would be nice but it seems like we are cursed not to have such a seemingly simple feature

Maybe built in logic to switch to different inputs based on shift position for backup cams.

One thing I was thinking was it didn’t need to even be a all in one self contained unit, most the electronics that need to be in there could me in a remote module to leave room for the necessary implements that must be there.

Sounds like people also want the option to choose whether or not the screen folds out at ignition start and folds in at ignition off independently, with an override option to hold the equipment in a given position if need be.

I think people would want RS 232, as it leaves a way for frontend support and software workarounds that would not otherwise be available if I understand the capabilities of it.

And I don’t know if this would even be possible at a realistic price, but if there was onboard support for correct native resolution modulation, as I know a lot of people fight it or settle with 800x600.

And I would personally like a nice big rotary knob for volume, I cant get over how much I love the units that I have with them for feel and simplicity while driving.

I am sure with the level of understanding most people have here they can come up with a lot better and realistic features that would be beneficial to make a much more user friendly devise, but hopefully this will get the ball rolling to consolidate our wishes so that a manufacturer can hopefully accommodate us in the near future.

That’s all I want its not unrealistic is it

You just said all features i would like in an indash screen..

I could just add some mecanical-electronical features of the unit :

- a light captor which could accomodate the brightness of the screen function of the ambiant light (like pioneer AVHP-5700DVD do). Niot difficult. The light captor will be coupled with a PWM inverter for the backlight of te screen.

- A full control of the screen movements like its position when out of the dash (Tilt function) which avoid your screen hurting the dash on openning when your unit is too deep in the dash (technicaly not difficult to do)

For having tried to make my own (I'll post pictures of my V2.0 soin) , I could say that the most difficult thing is integration. There is not a lot of space after the half of the DIN used for the screen. Just left a half!!!
And after putting a slot load DVD, it left....nothing!

After that you need to develop with very intagrated electronics composants.

A very hard job....

I think it would be easier to try build one for 2DIN sized one. but it is another topic...

You're not the first to propose the 'ideal' motorized screen with all the features that we would desire.
If it comes to fruition, that would be great, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Every other product that seemed to be the perfect unit has died quietly.

Anyone else remember Vicci?

I have seen that attitude around here is prevalent (not that I blame you I have read a lot of the long waiting and disappointments).

But don’t you think at this point with the popularity of carputors really starting to catch on , that it would be a natural progression to start introducing features users want as there are now FINALY solution out there (however flawed) to set a unit apart and make it marketable?

I would think it would take one motivated person with the proper capabilities and resources to tackle the problem, and screen technology would catch up to the capabilities that are available to make it a reality.

Even if all those features are overwhelming and unrealistic in a single unit, which ones would be more sought after or usable for us, so it makes it clear these are the things a majority of us wish to see?

do you think it would be reasonable to think people would deal with a two part system, where the motorization and drive could be installed in the HU style unit and be tethered to a remote module that would contain all the necessary electronics, not limiting the size of the unit so things could be built with std components which wouldn’t require very expensive integrated micro surface mount technology ? Knowing that there probably isn’t the kind of demand that would warrant the use of that kind of technology yet.

Remote module is for 1 DIN unit

That was the logic of the other person/company that was working on a similar product, as well.
The ultimate downfall of their development was a lack of funding. Granted, the popularity of vehilce PCs is rising, so the financial excitement that wasn't present a year ago might be there today.

136 views and people don’t want to chime in and state which features would be most important to them if a unit were to be produced?

I would think if we were to make our wishes clear and known, the likelihood of a unit being produced that would embody those features would only increase don’t you guys?
