So if I did want to use one of those mounts to hold one of those monitors, it should not be too big a deal for me to simply remove the back panel, line-up the and mark the holes placement and drill and mount? Think there would be enough clearance between the plastic back and the guts for some nuts/bolts?

NO!! There is no spare room for mounting brackets or hardware on the back of these small screens. the LCD controller board rests against the back of the plastic case. Do not use a VESA mount on small monitors.

Any suggestions then? I was planning on mounting my "unit" (still in development phase; either Libretto100CT or iPAQ or small laptop monitor) just in front of my vents in my Volvo V70, and I would like it to be adjustable and pivot to face the passenger. I am going to swap-in a single DIN HU and use the open space to fashion a plate onto which can mount a bracket, 9-inch arm, then the pivot VESA head. The VESA head I thought would be ideal for either the Libretto or laptop screen (with mods), and wanted to know about the future-upgradability to a Lilli or Xenar (or other) keeping that same mount.

Whatever monitor you purchase will come with a mount, a small one anyways for it to rest on a table. usually, these mounts come in two or 3 pieces. The first piece fits onto the back of the display. The second piece (or 2 pieces) make up the arm which attach to the 1st piece. If you fabricate some sort of arm, you should be able to use the mount pieces that you get.
