You were actually planning on building the motorized assembly? Did you use a servo? What went wrong? Sorry for all the questions, but that's what I'm planning for my "stealth" setup.![]()
Well, i've lost hope on ever finding a motorized in-dash vga
lcd. i failed at trying to make one from an ntsc one and haven't
been able to find someone to manufacture them for me.
Im going to just byte the bullet and get a 6.4" vga and mount
it flush in the dash. Does anyone know where the best price is
on 6.4" vga lcds. The best i found was this:

anyone know where i can get a better deal than this?
anyone purchased from here?

Hah, i guess you guys haven't used the search function, I actually started a topic on this a few months back (my other nick is messesb, i lost my stupid password, and have sense changed isp's and email addresses) ANyway, the thread got HUGE, and you may be able to dig some ideas from that thread. Look for the post by "messesb". I gave up hope as the space that I was gonna put mine in was too small for any lcd 5" or larger. Anyway, good luck.

heres a partial thread about my try to use an existing motorized display:
Frys Deal in Austin,TX
after i got the lcd out i could only find 1 6.4" vga lcd that would
fit in that space and it was only 120nits. i had thought i might
replace the backlight, but then things were getting too complicated. and i wasn't going to spend $1000 on a solution i didn't know would work.
I also have called over 5 car audio component manufacturers,
some of the smaller guys, to see if they would ship me just the
motorized units without screens or manufacture units for me.
Unfortunately nothing seems to have worked out. For a while,
I was seriously going to try and make these happen as a side
business since none of the big buys are trying to build one. However, I just don't have the resources. I also figure the market window is closing as Im sure someones going to come out with
one in the next 6 months or so.
As far as the long thread about doing the motorized screen, I
never heard that anyone ever made it happen. Anyway, its
not a cheap effort, nor one thats easy to do right.
If you still want to go for it, drop me a note or im me and well
talk.

As you can see, if you read the whole thread. No one actually
produced a working version of a motorized screen. Its better left to a production quality design and flow.

Will something like this work? I know it's not VGA, but it's cheap.

that guy is 5.6" lcd so it would work as a regular NTSC but
its going to be small and not vga resolution. It would also be
hard to put a vga in that guy as i don't know of any 5.6" vgas.

You're not going to find a motorized VGA LCD. You won't for a few years untill M$ joins together with huge car audio companies to monoplize the commercial in-car computing industry that is about to emerge.
That VGA LCD you were looking at isn't a bad price, just a little low on the luminace (brightness). Mine is 300 NITs and is decent in direct sunlight. It's made by NEC. I got it from earthlcd. Check my site for more info.
actually, one of the companies i spoke with "said" they
were working on having one by the fall......and i don't really know
why you would need microsoft for any of that to happen.
