As it was adequately put by DigitalWW, unit we discuss does have VGA input. Other units available are lacking this ability thus not very well suit to Carputer projects.
Accordingly to schematic on DigitalWW web site, here
there is only input for 2 lines, so it is purely stereo.
However, amplifier spec clearly states amp is 4 channel.
Looking into backside, there is a ISO socket #3 which has not been discussed in documentation.
Question: will it be possible to feed 4-channel sound here, for example from 5.1 processor, or it is only stereo.

If your gonna be running a surround sound setup, Id say youd most likely be running your speakers off of a real 4ch amp fed directly from a good soundcard, and just forget about the built in amp.
But either way, while it may be a 4ch amp in the unit, if its only got L and R inputs you get stereo.
If there a VGA-2DIN with S/PDIF input and real 5.1, there is definitely no doubt I'll get it for whatever cost. Also, there should be a way to manage not only left/right but front/rear balance. Even factory installed system usually have that ability.
If you look into backside, right sockets, ISO #3 (which is topmost), you'll see lots of contacts. I bet there is possiblity to access amp internals from that thing, just need to read docs properly or take a multimeter and find out.
And even if it not, but it is real 4CH amp, unit can be taken to car stereo repair shop where they find out how to solder into inputs of it and may be add single channel amp so it becomes 5.1. I have a buddy here who used that approach with stock stereo and seems to work great for him.
Can anyone use professional audio equipment to measure spec of the amp and publish it here ?

nearly all decks are stereo. F/R is just a fader control. Music still only has 2 channels. Decks with sub out are still stereo. The subout is not another channel but purely the low frez. CD and mp3s are all stereo too so unless you are playing DVDs, the 5.1 is useless.
It'd be cool to use carputer play higher quality media - hunderd+ gig of ripped AVIs, sometime Dolby AC-3ed music, videoclips, DVDs, etc.
Plus, having 5.1 capable system allows better tuning sound picture even if it is generic 2 channel stereo mp3. No to mention, quality USB sound processors and popular VIA boards are 5.1.

don't think you are going to get any better sound with 5.1 if the music is in stereo. Another down side to most soundcards is the preout voltage. They are usually fairly low. Headunits can be between 2-4 V rms usually. I don't think there will be a VGA unit with any form of audio processing anytime soon.
It runs WinCE though I think

And processing is done my specialized MB or USB external card I think, please correct if I wrong
