Don't get so excited.. the 7" array only uses 21 LED's, while it is a neat idea.. it's not interested in providing ultra bright backlights.. just alternatives to current ones.

One significant reason is LEDs are very bright. They provide the longest life, and they are almost infinitely customizable. In fact, their brightness is on a par with CCFLs (for example, when used with a light guide assembly for a 7” GPS display, they can provide approximately 7,000 to 8,000 cd/m² at the surface of the light guide, equivalent to approx. 350 to 500 nits front-of-screen brightness). If RGB LEDs are used, they provide a wider color gamut.
    These won't be very bright.

This is more how it needs to be done, imo:

Because people were arranging group buys and making off with the money. As a result, the powers that be decided to forbid them all together.
Want to arrange a group buy? Take it to DC and arrange your group buy.
This is the end of any group buy discussion. Any more discussing or *****ing about it will get your post deleted. If you persist we moderators will smack you around with a large trout.

I'm as curious about this mod as the rest of us (as the $679 transflective upgrade is too pricey for me).
Here's what I want to know:
    • How well does this stack up against the upgraded Lilliput that the store will sell?
    • Can this be used to upgrade a Xenarc or a Lilliput or a Super or an Avatar screen? (The Transflective upgrade is only on a Lilliput 629 presently). How about the in-dash screens like the 700IDT?
    • How easy or difficult would this be to install?
    • How much would it cost? Sure, $7 in 100K quantities. That would translate to about $20-30 for a single unit, I think.
But what do you get for that price?
    • Can the backlight's brightness be adjusted? Dimming that sucker at night would be a must so you don't blind the guy driving behind you or your passengers. Of course, it would be useful for finding the onion that fell off your burger before it smells up the whole car.
I think I'll have a chance to call them today and ask some questions. I'll let you know what I find out.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Hmmm...why not just add more LEDs around the light guide then? The light guide is the critical part, because it allows redirection of light that can be generated from an area somewhat remote to the screen (i.e. beside or below it, depending on the shape of the light guide)...it doesn't force the illumination method to be directly behind the screen.

Really, I'm surprised this solution hasn't been tried before...or maybe it has, as I am to busy/lazy to search at the moment.

I'm interested in hearing about the results of DarquePervert's call to the company, as I can't imagine why this wouldn't be significantly cheaper than the transflective upgrade. (I don't have any kidneys I'm willing to donate to be able to see a screen in my car...yet).

There was a VERY large thread or two from 2 guys who were attempting it. THey were trying different inverters and tubes. Someone also tried with a myriad of leds. I don't think anything ever came of it.

fair enough on the GB thing I didn't know there had been a history on here

    Back to the topic:

Surely the array of LED's on a plate will give a better image than using the more light on the light guide as this tends to make bright patches around the edge. Plus it will release a lot less heat into the LCD which can only be good for the picture.

I might have a go at doing one of them array boards

    @ DP:
I'm sure with the use of a light detecting thyrister it could be possible to have it auto dim whenever ambient light hit a preset level, or even have it connected to the headlights so it dims when lights are on?!?
