Hey, GizmoQ. You're too late! Muahahahaha! I just got off the phone with "Tech for Less", and my very own LE1600 will be making its way to me soon. They used to have two 1600's with "View Anywhere" displays. Now, they have one. That remaining one is a couple hundred more than the one I snagged, because mine had "minor cosmetic blemishes". Scratches around the USB port, as it turned out. I decided I could live with that.

I have a buddy that is interested in a "passive" display. (Is that some sort of wireless dumb terminal? A remote desktop?) I'll let him know that some new stuff is on the horizon. He'll be happy. Got links?

Regarding the lack of an external power button, I had gotten the impression that laptops/tablets did all right without a shutdown controller, because you could just fiddle with their power settings so they would shut themselves down after their external power went away. But they are totally lacking in any sort of automagic startup features. Since I'm a carputer newb, this probably won't bother me much. Right now I have to manually power on and off a portable mp3 player every time I get in the car, and dick with a handheld GPS, so my life is going to get easier no matter what.

Thanks for the reference to W3bMa5t3r's controller. I'll go read up on that...

    There are? Got any links?

Motion does a 1600 with dual input but the one I saw has a worse than average screen for daylight readability, let alone sunlight readability. The screen was completely different to the View Anywhere and the non-View Anywhere models and worse than both even indoors. But it was touch. If they ever produce an LS800 with View Anywhere and dual input, I would be so there... Well, I can dream. I have a suspicion View Anywhere and Motion's dual input are not compatible technologies.

That thread is here. (The key was to search only for posts by W3bMa5t3r.)

It's an interesting idea, and his execution looks good. (I really don't have the expertise to judge, though.) I just can't see myself cracking open my shiny brand new magnesium and carbon fiber case, so I can solder leads to my power switch. Not yet, anyway. Give me a month.

Both the 1600 and the 800 have microphone input jacks. I can't imagine why anyone would ever use them, since the built-in mic array and/or a Bluetooth headset would be so much cooler. If you could solder the two wires onto the switch, you could easily re-purpose that mic jack to connect those wires to the outside world. It'd be scary to do, but clean looking when you were done.

Ah, that approach. I really don't want to do that since I want the clean look and the ability to remove the tablet and take it inside. It's a good point about the microphone jack but I still want a clean look with the ability to simply put it into the dock.

I'm thinking it should be possible to build a USB device that can wake windows up since USB devices can do that. But I'm not remotely capable of doing it myself . For e.g. you can have a mouse or keyboard trigger the machine to resume from standby or hibernate so I guess you could hack a $10 usb mouse to become an on switch without too much risk of frying your computer through the USB port . Maybe I could manage that one. That implies the USB port is on even when the machine is in hibernate though which might drain the LS800's battery too fast.

Speaking of which, I did some tests yesterday and the battery only lasts somewhere between 8 and 13 hours in standby sitting in the dock. So instant resume in the morning to go to work might not be possible but instant on when returning from work should work. I'll repeat the test at some point to try and get a more accurate max standby time before the battery is critically low.

This is one of the features of their 1st bios update (they've onto the 3rd update now):
Enable S5 Wake capability for Marvell GigaLan (Enable LAN wake capability in device manager. To wake system from S5 – Device manager > Double Tap on “Marvell Yukon... > tap on Advanced > select “Wake From Shutdown” > set value to “ON”. AC must be plugged-in
I wonder if you can use a loopback interface to cause the system to wake because if thinks a LAN is connected. If that only triggers when AC is plugged in, you'd be home free in one go. I was reading a thread the other day about people succeeding at doing this with certain desktop PCs with wake on lan functionality that just required a physical connection and not the magic packet.

Here's the thread where I found out about it (previously I'd only heard of Wake On Lan which is of no use for a car PC):

And google pointed me back at mp3car.com for the loopback wiring answer:
    Power On laptop at start
I will try to give that a go tomorrow.

So DaveNagy, What are your impressions of the LE1600 now that you've had it for a few weeks?
