This has been done before with these films, just no before and after pics.
3M DBEF & BEF Enhancement Film installed into Xenarc Screen
there are other links in that thread.
the guy did say it was an improvement for brightness.

and i have received last month free samples of the films that 3m makes. but i am no where near installing my pc in my car yet. hell i still need to get a bigger alternator. the lights dim when i turn on the back defroster and everything else is on. this is with no pc or amp or anything else just all stock.

either way i would like to put in the lcd without the films then take pics on a good sunny day with direct light. then take it out and put all the films in and take pics again.

i will put money on it that your grounds are corroded. not jsut the ones on your battery but the chassis mount and possiblyl even corrosion on the alternator connections too. you should look into that...sorry, back to the post

The problem i see with your proposed plan (2 post above) is that once light enters the edges of the plexiglass sheet, it doesn't really exit on the "lcd exposed" sides but rather travel to the other edge of hte sheet. It's kinda like a strand of fiber optic cable, light goes in and out on 1 axis but not the other.

For the light to exit on the "lcd exposed" sides, you have to...drill/cut...but most likely sand the exposed surface for the light to escape. Problem is how uniform the light will be??

the light escapes through the edges and the surface abrasions.

Easiest way for a brighter screen is to add more CCFL, problem is how to fit more of them in the screen? Once you solve the brightness problem , you are going to give yourself 2 more problems. 1)With low contrast screens, your image will be washed out. 2)How do you plan on dimming the screen at night time?

the only problem i see with that idea is that the plexiglass panel will have to be exposed to the sun some how... not really looking that great at all.

but if your looking to keep the light that is in the back light to bounce back you should look at these from 3m, i got a free sample of these with the films i asked for i had to make sure though to ask for every film i wanted at one shot so i just said i wanted to test them all..lol IN MY CLEAN ROOM...lol
Vikuiti™ Enhanced Specular Reflector Film (ESR)
its like a mirror finish for the back of your lcd panel. if you have taken one apart you notice they just use a white thick paper maybe cardboard i dont really care its white. either way the ESR you just put over that. i know cutting it to the right size is going to be pain and then bend it around the edges of the ccfl. but hey nothing free comes easy.

but like acuraTLfan said. your still going to have to see if you get washed out. there are plenty of other threads about putting more ccfl in. just none came out that good.

scott fx thats a good idea i really havent looked at the grounds yet. the ones on the bat looked so clean i didnt think of it. but then again i did just get the car. so they probly brushed the battery terminals before i got there. its just a toyota camry. with a 60amp alternator so even with that i calculate that i would need more when i put the pc in and an amp for the speakers.
this is my calculations. from my understanding of ohms law 60amp*12v=720 watts

meddotnet: would be good for outdoors perhaps? like on a boat? or a convertible car

I was thikning of a way of using the outdoor ambient light to feed through. I looked at fenels and perhaps even some fibre optics down a tube from the roof!

I ended up just tinting my windows

I have done a lot of playing with high brighting lcd's & I have dissasembled transflective screens too....

it is my opinion that if you take an lcd apart, & use a high quality mirrored tint directly on the rear of the lcd glass layer, that you will achieve similar results to a transflective screen, BUT in doing so, you'll also cut down on the available backlighting a bit too... the tint will dim the screen for use with the ccfl alone.... a 250 nit screen may wind up a 190 nit screen after your "upgrade", but of course in the sun, the transflective qualities will boost your output to an effective brightness level that should be well over the original 250.... how much so is experimental & dependent on plenty of variables though...

this is a picture of one of my transflective screens dissasembled... the thing that appears as a mirrored layer is actually the rear of the lcd... that's the rear of the mirror layer... the outcome of an experiment like this will be determined by the film used...
