    Future display possibility

    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060825-7593.html
the MIT one laptop per child project... an excerpt:
Technical details regarding the 8" LCD screen have also been released, and despite the initial skepticism of the naysayers, the folks at MIT have hit a home run. The display will feature 1200x900 resolution. In a statement on the OLPC web site, project chairman Nicholas Negroponte reveals that the CM1 display "has higher resolution than 95 percent of the laptop displays on the market today, approximately one-seventh of the power consumption, one-third of the price, sunlight readability, and room-light readability with the backlight off."
and that's to be part of a $140 laptop. Hopefully that display technology will make its way into the small standalone VGA LCD market before too long... Daylight readable, super low power, and high resolution, and presumably not all that expensive...
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

I don't think it's available for us to buy in the US. I read somewhere (probably CNN or LA Times) that it's only available in country like India, China, Thai .... The govement has to enroll in the program in order to buy those laptops.

I know, the laptops are meant for providing computers in poorer areas of the world. I wasn't suggesting that we try to buy them or anything...

I was merely suggesting that since they figured out how to make the displays for those laptops rather cheaply, that hopefully they can bring the same technology to screens in the regular commercial market.
