    Know any good red lcds?

I've been looking for good Red lcds

The only ones I see anywhere are the ones at CrystalFontz (www.crystalfontz.com).

Has anybody gotten these? Anybody know if these things are bright enough to use in the auto during the day?

I'm looking to fetch a couple of the inverted ones if they are worth it.

Does anybody know anyplace else to get them?

    thanks..

edit: a whole views and nobody had much to offer.. so I thought I'd make the title more specific

I bought a really nice Red LCD off of ebay. It's LED backlit so the viewing angle is a little tight, but it works.

If you buy a LED backlighted LCD you can change it. These have a small empty box under the LCD with the LCD side covered by a thin white sheet that allows the light through and the other end covers a thin PCB with a bunch of small surface mount LED's. Simply remove that thin PCB and replace it with one of your own with red LED's soldered to it, or if you have good eyes resolder the tiny LEDs on the oniginal PCB. One thing to keep in mind though is red does not appear as bright to the human eye as other colors so I would double the amount of LEDs. For example the one I took apart had 6 so replace it with 12. You could also go with White or Blue LEDs for a different look.

Hows about using these EL sheets behind your LCD to glow red?

Is this possible? I don't think it is.. but then again I don't know much about this stuff at all.

If your LCD had some kind of backlight already, then it is real easy. If it didnot already have a backlight, you need to peel the reflective strip off the back and have enough space under it to fit the EL strip

Go ahead and order from crystalfontz if you want a simple solution.

You can hack and build your own but it takes a bit of tooling around.

I imagine it should be fine in the day.

Just curious...If i were to change the backlight of a LCD to blue and then inverse it....would it look slightly similar to a VFD?

It might look similar, but it most likely won't be as bright.
