    Deciding what kind of lcd?

I hear a lot of talk about an LCD screen being good for computer but then sucking for dvds and video. What features makes it good for both. Or what should I look for in an LCD that would show a good quality image on both.

I wanted to search for this instead of asking (cause I know someone is going to say something about it) but I really have no idea of what to search for.

Sorry for all the newbie questions.

an lcd screen that is at the MINIMUM 12 bit will give you decent picture for dvd... 18-bit would be even better.

size is what counts for viewing computer screens... if you have a 5 inch monitor think about the resolution you are going to have to run to get viewable text. i wouldnt go for anything under 8.4 inch. but that is a personal opinion...other may tell you that you can go smaller for a lcd screen.

also, make sure you can run at least 640x480 on the resolution. you might not want to run it to high, but at least you have the option to do so.

VGA lcd screens are the way to go if you want clear outputs. composite video is decent for something like a playstation, but for computer video... vga is the ideal solution... especially since you have a video card outputing vga as a default.

also, the screen must be a tft screen or the video will not be clear.

    i already made that mistake!

I was thinking of getting a VGA LCD from earth lcd with the controller. So, all I really have to do is make sure it is a TFT, and 18 bit or higher, and can support a 640X480 resolution?

Just want to make absolutly sure I will be happy with the results of my laboring.

earth lcd is VERY expensive... mostly because those are the prices that are available in the normal market. look on ebay for a bit and check out the for sale section here often... you might be able to snag a controller or a complete setup for cheap... i only say this because i wouldnt want to pay earthlcd prices.

shop around before you make a commitment to pay "retail" for the screen setup. there are always other options.

oh and it is going to be more expensive if you are limiting yourself to 18 bit screens...

one more thing to keep in mind is the brightness rating of a screen.... it is generally recommended that you get at least 200 for the brightness ( i think the unit is C/m^2, or nits). you can go as low as 150, but that is usually pushing the limits of sunlight visibility...
