using LPT plugs for quick connect -> LCD Extension

    Hi guys,

I am about to extend my LCD cable. It is a 20 core sheilded cable.

I have a 25core parallel cable (printer cable) here that i am going to cut up and use for the extension (this should be ok right? i think it is sheilded, it has foil on the inside of it????).

In order for me to quickly and easily remove the screen from my car, i am going to use the 25 pin connectors on the end of the parallel cable to connect the screen to and from the extension lead.

In essence, the LCD will now have a 25pin LPT connector on a short lead, and the extension lead will have the opposite sex plug on one end and the connector to the controller on the other.

can anyone see any problems with this idea?

    Cheers!
    Ian

Just exactly how far are you extending? Parallel signals really can't go that far. I've had lots of trouble with my LCD in my car. You can't use a normal parallel extension cable? If I were you I'd definately try everything outside of the car because it would suck to do all that work then have it not work.

Thats what i want to use! Why wouldn't it work?

Is video a parallel signal? In case you are mixed up...i am not extending a parallel signal from the parallel port. I am using the cabel from a parallel extension cable and using the 25pin plugs for a quick disconnect/connect solution for my LCD!

    here is a diagram:

    [PCI Controller]--------Extension---------[25pin Male]--/ --[25pin female]---------LCD.

    get the gist?

Nah my appologies. I am talking about my 12.1" LCD.

My char LCD probs have finished! (for interest sake, i extended my char lcd's quite a distance with no degradation what so ever!)

I also want to do the same thing-I`m going to have an allen ruble controller in the boot, and a lg lcd up front. I figured that extending a digital signal is better than extending an analogue one (ie. vga signal).

Did you have any problems extending the char lcd cable? what is the max. length of the parallel cable? Is 4m too much?

I successfully extended my Char LCD cable to about 2.5-3mtrs (rough guess) without any trouble. It was three Paralell cables joined together!
