    Tacky?

What do you guys think of this? Im kind of fed up with trying to locate a vga lcd all in one type deal (like the datalux deal). I had a dennisk setup, it worked for 2 weeks, and now its dead. Im still working on getting that fixxed (sent it back to him, but I havent heard from him in like a week now). Im pretty much just fed up with the whole project (and I had a working carputer for about 2 weeks untill the screen died). The dennisk setup, the datalux screen, and the earthlcd.com kits all cost 300+ for basically a small, low res, low nits screen, when I can goto best buy, buy a 15" nice res display for around that price tag.

I have a 99 mustang gt, Ive already pulled out the center console piece, moved the ac controls, the ac vents themselves, and moved the head unit from the top slot to the bottom slot (to make room for the dennisk setup). The question is, do you guys think it would be tacky to just basically mount a 15" screen right there in the dash? Theres pretty much no way I can make it look "stock", but it will fit in there for sure, but it will look like just that, like a 15" screen that was simply mounted on my dash.

pros: high res, nice pic, great brightness, 32 bit depth (<- better overall then any setup on the net) no controllers, inverters, etc to mess with

cons: mounting might not look as nice, no way to get touch on it.

The screen will fit there, just a question of how good/bad it will look. What do you guys think? (I dont really have any particular model in mind, just any generic 15" flat lcd that you can get from any store).

I see only one problem.. well maybe two depends how you install it. One is that'll be really really big for something in the car. Cool... but big. Another thing is if you do do the 15inch.. i'd make some kind of screen to blend it in to the dash. You got a nice car and people looking to steal say your radio might see that screen and drool.

I like my setups to be able to hide away and blend in nicely and can be stored away easily. It all comes down to you.. if you can mount a 15 inch in a mustang dash more power to you. That sounds like a lot of work.

As an aside: You *can* "get touch on it" very easily. Just spend 40 bucks on an after-market touch screen overlay.

Well actualy mounting it wouldnt be any work at all. I have the space already made for it (because I had to make room for the dennisk setup). I would have to figure out a good way to bolt it down, but it really wouldnt be that difficult. The hard part would be making it fit in the dash and look stock. That would involve removing the entire dash piece (similiar to that civic owner who removed his entire dash to get his screen in there) and go to town on it with a dremel :P Wouldnt be impossible, just really really really difficult lol. Dennisk finally emailed me this morning, looks like he is going to give me a new kit. But Im still not sure if I even want to mess with it. I may just end up re-listing it on ebay and look for another alternative.

InFix, your DennisK setup went dead as well? Heh. I've had mine for .. oh... four days now. Screen still works, but the microtouch controller burned out for some reason.

Unless you have an excursion, 15" might be a little big, but you should be able to find a 10-12" desktop lcd that might fit a little better, other than that, if you have the room, and you like it, go for it. The giant lcd pod in that honda didn't do things for me, but if the driver liked the result (and he did), so much the better (i will say that the crafstmanship on it was outstanding).
