    BMW e46 Double Din

    Hi,

This is my 1st post, have spent many hours reading through variours projects, most people tend to go for the custom fit bezel and mount a 7" lcd to fill the double din slot (and drop the air con control unit to the sunglasses holder) then use an amp for the speakers.

Is it possible to fit the standard factory business CD player into the same slot the ac control unit was in, and fit a motorized touch screen above it? i have seen a facia that may work http://www.mybimmer.net/e46_centered.htm

My plan is then to use the car2pc adaptor and the aux function to get sound and the reslers ibus unit to use the steering wheel controls.

I have searched the forums and have not seen it attempted/possible on a BMW.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i have a 200 323i and i have been runnning a aux input too my factory radio with an adaptor that plugs into my cd changer , i have a sub , and a 12inch box in the back , sound great. I am moving on too the car pc and am going to make a custom bezel. where ill show you later and I will be selling them if you like one later on let me know. I am going to run the sound of the laptop i am going to put in the back through my aux audio source. keeping my radio for fm/am direct source, while i wait for the computer to run out of hibernation mode. I am trying to find out how to make the computer turn on and off when i turn the car on and off, without just shutting the computer down. do you know what adaptor i can use. I know I can use a inverter on here , but they are not used for laptops.

    thanks for the reply.

ill be doing the same sort of setup, so were in the same boat buddy.

As for powering the laptop so it somes on with ignition, im still searching the forums, as most people seem to have a base unit. ill let you know if i find anything relevant. My guess would be to get a power switch and mount it somewhere in the car for switching on/off...

Do you plan on using a motorized screen? or doing away with the stereo and using an amp?

it appears i have found the solution

according to forums in e46 fanatics you cannot have 2 din units, as the din where the ac controls is housed isnt deep enough!

hope this helps anyone else trying to research this idea

    dambro,

this an option that i have found through variours forums that may help you, this is my plan so far:

    Screen= e46 bezel and 7" xemarc screen (www.mybimmer.net)

Power= laptop power inverter specific to my laptop (Sony vaio)

    Startup Controller= http://www.w3bma5t3r.com/LaptopModule/disclaimer.html

Shutdown Controller= Software Power Management, which will auto hibernate the laptop after engine shutoff.

If anyone else has any further suggestions let me know

Thw only thing i need to research is the best amp for the factory speaker setup, and how to power the lcd screen...
