    Improvised sunlight readable

I was wondering if anyone has tried taking a piece of Two-way mirror and placing it between the backlight and the lcd? Are there any highly risky potential drawbacks I'm missing? Isn't this the essential logic of a translective screen? As the sun gets brighter, use it as a natural backlight?

I've been meaning to. Looking at the sheets, it seems thermally it would work.

The reason I haven't yet is that guy will just not out and out sell one, I keep meaning to watch the auctions and then they go too high or I forget. (I always bid late). I emailed him a couple weeks ago (and why I wanted one) and said how much do you want for one and could you just post one "Buy It Now"?

    He told me
    1. No, but by the 4x4 to test
    2. Probably be better using the teletype class, which I'm not sure I agree with.

Either way, it's on my short TODO

I think the problem with that is the transmissive qualities of the one way mirror will severely restrict the amount of light from the backlight that will get through to the screen, for those times when it is dark and there is no sunlight to reflect back. It will require some additional backlighting to get through.

It is worth a try though.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I turn my backlight way down at night, I believe it's going to let ~30% through IIRC. Thought the teleprompter type is more like 50% transmission.

The 5x7 is almost perfect for the 8"

Yah that's another reason I put the ebay link as you can see it in front of a screen. I agree with shotgunefx in that the screen is plenty bright at night. If it lets through 50% of the light you're bound to get at least a little relection from ambient light. When my carputer is off I can still see my hand in front of my face so there's at lease some light in the car that is bound to be reflected.

Good potential con though. Anything else?

Well, finally just ordered a piece as the daylight performance of the lilli is killing me. Then I'll have to think about backlight upgrades.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Please do! This sounds like an interesting project. I would have never thought of using a 2-way mirror.

If you decide to try it, please please post the results. Im sure alot of us (including myself) are dying to know of effective ways to trim down the glare on our touchscreens.

I'll definitely post what I find one way or another. Also, never removed my backlight so I'll probably be asking for some tips on that
