LED backlight technology, is it there yet?

Just curious what the overall concensus is on using LED's as a backlight. NOT some kind of low level upgrade I would do myself, but a factory making 7" TS LCDs using LEDS instead of CCFL.

I didn't see much posted on it, so I was wondering if it was new, old, or I just missed it.

someone on the forums did it himself, it worked very nicely... much brighter and much less glare because of it... and its coming mainstream as well

I know some of the mods that people do are amazing, and I respect that. Definitely want to read that thread.

I was more interested in the "next wave" of backlight from manufacturers.

LEDs, good or bad or pros and cons. Or even if anyone knows what stage they are in as far as becomming mainstream or Betamax.

I haven't heard much about them, it's all CCFL.

ccfl's are older tech & will eventually being replaced with led's & eefl's... larger screens in the 20-30-40" & up range are already using this tech & it's only a matter of time till this trickles down to smaller screens really...

    here

    and even laptops

there are advancements in light guides too that take better advantage of led's as edge lit vs rear lit..

a few years from now ccfl's will be old news for sure... even on smaller screens I'd think...

if you want to see a very bright led backlight in a dash check out my screen.... really long thread but theres lots of pictures & info on the luxeon leds as a backlight...

I've been there & done that, & to tell you the truth, in a car, I think transflective & reflective technology is an equal or even in some ways better solution than a super bright screen... reflective screens are where it's going to be really... I'm doing one in my new install

Hey, TurboCad, fancy meeting you here... )

I was just reading the thread on your mod, very slick. I would guess efficiency and longevity is the reason for LEDs, super-duper brightness too. I didn't see much in the way for the little screens (7-10") from factories. Seems like everyone is still squeezing an extra nit or three from CCFL.

I just ordered a few 7" factory LED prototypes with all the attachments as an open frame. Specs say 400 nits. TS, driving board has VGA, AV, remote, wiring harnesses, etc. They should be here by the end of this month, so I'll post my findings. 8" is an option in the near future too.

I also have a 650 CCFL panel that is waiting on a board. It (the 650) was going to be my primary monitor, and was sweet when I had it running on the bench, so I have a "super bright" CCFL to compare these new LEDs to. Maybe I'll go LED???

Just looking from a price standpoint, I would put these somewhere between xenarc's and transreflective. If all goes as planned, I will be a disributor for them in the US.

oh yeah, just realized it was you

are they claiming 400 nits with the touchscreen or without? 400 with is pretty good, guess a lot will depend on how they manage glare really, curious to see how you make out with them

My assumption is without the TS they state 400 nits, still pretty good IMHO. Glare control = Anti Glare w/ 5% haze. I dont think that means 95% transmission though, but we shall see.

Maybe I'll pull the CCFLs out of the 650 and stick them behing the LCDs, and then have the worlds first CCFLLED panel!

But then again, why mess with the perfectly good 650 besides the obvious answer of because its there? )

Although I abandoned my "similar to TurboCad's" LED backlight project because I was satisfied with my PSOne screen, I'm sure I'll want a larger screen in the future, so here I am...subscribed. Sigh.
