I want to make the switch, just need a little help

I have had my carputer running for quiet some time now and i'm really thinking about making the switch to linux. I'm running Ubuntu 7.04. I've been looking at the linuxICE and nghost, but i seem to really be confusing myself. Whats the difference. I downloaded both but the nghost package installer says that it's installed now but i cant find it :S and the linuxICE i can't get to install. I burned it to a cd as an .iso and tryed to boot from it like it says your suppose to here, but it won't do anything. I guess i don't understand how things are installed on linux compared to window, but i'd really like to learn because i know there are alot more things that can be done on linux, and needless to say it's not windows Thanks in advanced!

    Hi,
    welcome to the in-car-linux comunity!

Nghost package doesn't include the menu icon, so you can't find it in the gnome menu.
You have to open up a terminal (under accessories) and type
    Code:
    nghost
    , then enter.
    to make it fullscreen, type
    Code:
    nghost -f
to load your music and movies, you had to modify /etc/nghost/options.conf before opening nghost.

Linuxice is still in alpha stage, so errors and bugs are quite normal.
Can you explain what you have done more clearly?
    I would like to know:
    1-your system hardware
    2-how do you burned linuxice
3-what you see when you start the system with the cd.

    bye

another bit of info we'll need is what build of LinuxICE you downloaded?

If the iso image downloaded correctly you should be able to boot up to it and run it without even installing. When you want to install, just click on the "install" program and let it roll.

    hope that helps...

barb3tta- thanks alot i got it up and running, i just need to change the directory's now

I'm running a Dell GX60 It has a 2.0 Ghz processor with 512 ram, onboard video, 13 gig hd, cd-rw (have slotload hooked up also for car)
    hope that helps :S

As for LinuxICE i downloaded LinuxICE-Feisty.iso it looks to be Alpha 3. When i open it there isn't a "install" program. I burned to to a disk just by right clicking a hitting burn to disk. That is the way i did my Feisty Install. When i boot the system it doesn't even try to run from the disk even tho it set to run from cd-rom first if it can.

I can't seem to save my options.conf after i change my directories. I says that it is a read only and that i don't have the permissions necessary to save the file.

make sure you have superuser permissions before editing nghost's options.conf.

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/nghost/options.conf
Alternatively, copy the /etc/nghost/options.conf to your /home/your-user-name/.nghost/options.conf. You can edit the one in your home folder without superuser permissions.

if LinuxICE won't burn, it may be a corrupted download. If you are using Linux you can compare the md5sum of the image that you downloaded to the one on the server: a8edf128df35ff27b95434bd9550df48

    Code:
    $md5sum LinuxICE-Feisty.iso
I would try to download Alpha 4-11 or 4-12 though, or wait until the final Alpha4. They should work better than Alpha3.

PS. I really like your install. Good job!

I got this to work in the Terminal

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/nghost/options.conf
but when try to change the music directory to

    Code:
    musicdir=home/drew/music
and i open nghost i still cant see any music. I made a icon on the desktop to open nghost with the launcher command as
    Code:
    nghost -u -f
    where did i go wrong?

I'll try messing with linuxICE after i get this working, being as i don't even know what linuxICE is

Thanks for checking my install out,i hope to take it up to the next level with linux

What type of files are in your musicdir?

run nghost -d1 -u in a terminal and see if it gives you any error messages.

alternatively hop on #linuxice on irc.freenode.com (you can use gaim that comes with ubuntu). The guys there will get you sorted out in no time.

    Good luck
