That's cool you are willing to try out Linux. If you are going with ubuntu add the LinuxICE repo so you can easily get updates.
A simple:
will go a long way.Quote:
sudo apt-get install nghost icetouch
Here is more information on the LinuxICE stuff.

Yeah, my friend downloaded Ubuntu and was showing it to me it's really cool. Something I'll try out for sure.
Thanks for the link. I'll probably be trying out a lot of things in the near future. Free GPS is a major reason I am going to try and go with Linux, I hope to find good working software for that need.
I'll be looking around once I get my carputer computer usable. Thanks for the help.
GPS in linux is an adventure for sure, but you can't hate the OS because of the front end. nGhost is young and still developing (Rapidly if i might add). linux (and yes i have used mac windows and linux[actually typing this on an xp machine right now]) is a better OS than XP. The linuxice team is doing it's best to bring together all the different pieces of linux software out there into one os that simply requires inserting a disk and hitting install. I am a linuxice/nGhost team member, and I have been running xp in my car for a while, but at soon as nGhost 1.1 hits the web, I am converting. Better boot times, more reliable, and much more customizable.
Any word on when the release will be? I'm not trying to pressure or anything, just curious.
LinuxICE sure sounds nice I read a little bit about it.
ill finish this with one comment about windows and linux:
they both have their ups and downs, in the end of the day if your willing to give linux a go and spend a little bit of time tinkering and asking for help then linux will give you what you want. windows people already know and understand so seting up is a cinch - however it is a worse layout from the ground up and can require more hw than linux.
anyone who wants to discuss/battle this then visit me on irc://irc.freenode.net/#linuxice

anyways :focus: nghost 2.0 is in the making and will probably be ready to go late feb early march (the other guys on the dev team dont know about this date yet :D)
this should get us up to scratch feature wise with RR, and around august next year we should have nghost 3.0 up and going which will look much nicer (kev you can blast me for the deadlines in the chan :D)
--------------
in regards to linuxice - its basically a cutdown ubuntu (soon to be changed to debian) distro with the nghost repositories. i'm going to be pushing to have this done by the end of january (and yes kev i will help)
Hopefully we can keep with gladier's new deadlines. We spent like 6 months on .95 ;)
What you guys are forgetting is that linux is free. Maybe for some retail price for xp is peanuts, but for me, I would rather put this money towards better speakers ;).
Also I am getting 10 second boots with Linux from a 4GB CF card, I also can set-up linux in a way so it will hammer less with writes on the card to prolong the life, while with windows it is impossible to do that. I think that people went with windows because of pirated copies freely available on the net. If every one would pay retail, more people would consider using linux. Well anyway thumbs up for nghost team, if they could beat Roadrunner (which I have tried on my friends windows machine) that it would be greatest thing happening for Linux in carpc field.
Yeah. I just put ubuntu on my main use laptop and I am loving it so far (20 minutes) so I'm leaning towards it for my car pc. I'm looking forward to nghost. Thanks guys.
