Linpus anyone?

Hey guys, I was a die hard winxp user, until I got an old p3 laptop (1ghz, 512mb ram). I decided to throw ubuntu linux on it.

Some background on me, I love to tinker with things....linux is perfect for me! I loaded it up, and started to research how to use ubuntu. I got my thinkpad buttons to work, aswell as the Thinkpad center scrolling button (yay! I read that not too many people have figured it out..i did in 10 minutes!). Anyways, I LOVE ubuntu, so clean, so sleak....

anyways, I had an idea to use linux on a carpc... I saw nghost and linuxice, but thought I would keep looking.,...then I found this: http://www.linpus.com/xampp/webmaste...nux9.4Lite.htm
still linuxice and nghost seem like a better option...but I still want to try

Sounds pretty good...haven't loaded it up yet, and might not...but once I get fed up with my slower winxp carpc system (1.2ghz p4mobile, 1gb ram), i might just throw it in!

It seem's to be a bit heavy judging by the livecd size and amount of features it has, I'd say give it a shot.


I wonder if it is a custom distro or based off of something common like LinuxIce is. If it's custom, it may be slightly harder to find drivers/programs for it :-/. Keep us posted if you try it

the thing with linux, atleast ubuntu (and xubuntu kubuntu ect) come with pretty much all drivers built in. this one says it comes with gps drivers for most gps's. GPS software might be a little iffy though, aswell as finding a skin for a media player (xxms i guess?) that is touch screen friendly.

you can have many different virtual desktops...so you could make one with the gps software, other with media player, one with _______(place name here) and you can easily and quickly switch between them. Then just hibernate the system, and when it comes back up, all your music and everything will be open, sounds perfect for me! basically a front end!

my only concern at the moment would be if the buttons for switching desktops is touch friendly (ie spaced apart and fairly large). I might just try it on my laptop and see how it goes before throwin it on the carpc

yep, your exactly right, that is the beauty of Linux.

btw, there's nothing stopping you from using icepanel and nghost on any distro of your choice. they can take care of your TS friendly workspace switcher and media player issues.

wow, I never even thought of icepanel, or even heard of it. Looked at it, and wow, it looks like it would be perfect! heck the more i look at linuxice and nghost the more i might just stick with what works! how customizeable is nghost?

installed this today on my old p3, works great!
I know the lite version does not come with an installer, but i manage to find a tutorial on how to install it.

NOW! Someone tell me how to get hibernation working on this!

a few of things to note.
-this is probaly the fastest booting linux distribution i've ever seen (compared to ubuntu, mandriva) (45 seconds for cold boot: 20 from POSt, and 25 more for boot)
-there is a touchscreen software installed, but it does not work unless you're able to set to 800x480 resolution, which is not available in my display properties.
-its too slow running on my p3 256mb of ram.
-Once installed, u can switch the hard drive between any computer and it'll boot up fine.
-on my coreduo 1.6gb it runs super smooth.

awesome Punky, sounds good! I think I will switch over to linux, i hate windows and how it always manages to f* up when i need it most

not so fast guys. Everything is looking great, except for the touchscreen problem.
I spent all today trying to force the 800x480 resolution so the touchscreen works properly, but i could never get my xorg.conf file to save the modified content. I changed under root, and exited xserver as well. All my setting would disapear everytime i restart. Anyone with better linux experience please teach me how to add a custom resolution.

BTW. One totally retarded thing about this distro is the fact that its suppose to be touchscreen friendly, which most things are, except for the world's smallest window closing button.
