Thread: Installing NavIt

What error did you get? What distribution of linux are you using?

there is a guy on #navit (irc.freenode.com) that makes debs from the svn snapshots. That may help you get it installed and running.

IMHO, navit is a pain to get up and going.

Take a look at tangogps (google it). It's pretty nice, but needs more community and developer support to get it to the point where it's really useful.

i was able to get navit running, however i could not get maps installed to save my life. anyway, does tangogps do routing and if it does will it do turn by turn?

I sucessfully installed tango and it works awesome and installed quite well. From what I have played with it did not have turn by turn but its still good (better than uninstalled navit)

the only place that i have ever gone to to get deb files was Ubunutu's "getdeb.net" which seems to not be offline when i need it... grrr

what about roadnav? seems to install nicely on my desktop nicely and has turn by turn

let me know how that works for you. i downloaded it last night and it froze up on me while downloading maps. im guessing once the maps are downloaded you no longer need the internet for it to work. that would be the only way i could use it seeing as i do not have internet in the car.

my new favorite is roadnav it does everything! it downloads AND caches maps so you can use it offline... easy turn by turn and easy set up

i'm going to have to give roadnav a try again. I didn't like it back in the day and now I forget why haha.

what about gpsdrive? I just searched the repos I have setup and couldn't find any of the ones mentioned but this one shows up.
