Doesn't this mean its being detected?
The problem was never the FTDI chip not being detected, it was the module deciding to start talking garbage whenever it felt like it.

could you give me more detailed instructions?
    Sure.

Make sure you have libftdi-dev installed:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libftdi-dev
Then, grab obdgpslogger [probably from svn, if you can, since there's some small changes that went into ftdipty since the last release].

Build and install using the same instructions as you find on that page. In short:
    Code:
    mkdir build; cd build
    cmake ..
    make && sudo make install
There's info about how to blacklist modules, here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=166624

Blacklist ftdi_sio, rmmod it, unplug and replug the device. Then run "obdftdipty".

If all goes to plan, it will tell you that it created a pty, and give you the full path to it. Try using that instead of /dev/ttyUSB0

What device do you have? Did you unplug and replug it?

I *think* libftdi needs usbserial, check that that's modprobe'd?

Thanks for all your help and fast responses Gary.

The device is a tactrix "open port 1.3 usb" FTDI cable purchased from http://www.limitless.co.nz/cables/
    I did unplug/replug. Even Rebooted.

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ sudo modprobe usbserial
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ obdftdipty
Couldn't find any FTDI devices attached to system
yet lsusb says the device is detected:
    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0403:cc4a Future Technology Devices International, Ltd product FTDI TACTRIX_OPENPORT_13U 0xcc4a OpenPort 1.3 Universal
and I think the blacklist worked because I do not see ftdi_sio in the lsmod:
    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ lsmod

Oh, that might be a device that I don't have listed in the ftdipty source.

Could you try editing src/ftdipty/ftdipty.c, and change the vendor ID [line 66] to 0x0403, and add the deviceid [line 68 or so] to the list [device id is 0xCC4A]

I need to add those as options to the tool command-line. Hrm.

    Do an svn update:
    Code:
    chunky@chunkplug:~/src/obdgpslogger$ ./bin/obdftdipty --help
    Usage: ./bin/obdftdipty [params]
       [-c|--modifyconf]
       [-d|--daemonise]
       [-b|--baud <number>]
       [-V|--vendorid <hex vendor id>]
       [-D|--deviceid <hex device id>]
       [-v|--version] [-h|--help]
    chunky@chunkplug:~/src/obdgpslogger$
    There we go. Try:
    Code:
    obdftdipty -V 0x0403 -D 0xCC4A
[or the other way around, in case I'm reading something wrong]

Pardon my ignorance by I am trying to keep up with your direction.

I downloaded subversion: sudo apt-get install subversion
then downloaded the svn from your page: svn co svn://svn.icculus.org/obdgpslogger/trunk obdgpslogger

I tried some of the commands you just posted with no results???
    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ obdftdipty -D 0x0403 -V 0xCC4A
    obdftdipty: invalid option -- 'D'
    obdftdipty: invalid option -- 'V'
Couldn't find any FTDI devices attached to system

    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ obdftdipty -D 0x0403 -V 0xCC4A
    obdftdipty: invalid option -- 'D'
    obdftdipty: invalid option -- 'V'
Couldn't find any FTDI devices attached to system
    I have a feeling I didn't update the subversion correctly :/

After doing an svn update and re-running make, you'll need to run "make install" again. Either that, or address the one in bin/ directly. When you ran "svn update", did it tell you that ftdipty.c [and a bunch of others] got updated?

What's happening [I assume] is you've updated and built, but the one you're running is the one in /usr/local/bin, made previously.

Sorry, maybe I should clarify, I have no idea how to do an svn update. however I just took a guess and ran:

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ svn update obdgpslogger
    At revision 329.
However I am not sure what you mean by running make or make install. I don't know what directory I would do this in. If it makes any difference, I originally installed obdgpslogger from the tar on your site, not from svn, so I am in uncharted territory here.

    Thanks for your patience.

Ah, my apologies for making you leap through more hoops than might arguably be necessary. The numbered tarball release won't work if you try to update with svn.

The following copy-paste should work out for you [might want to copy-paste one line at a time]:

    Code:
    svn co svn://svn.icculus.org/obdgpslogger/trunk obdgpslogger-trunk
    mkdir -p obgpslogger-trunk/build && cd obgpslogger-trunk/build
    cmake ..
    make && sudo make install
Then try running obdftdipty --help and check that -V and -D are now available.

Thank-you for *your* patience! I realise that obdgpslogger is still relatively in the realm of "some-linux-knowledge-required", and I really appreciate your time when things don't immediately magically work.
