Thank-you for *your* patience! I realise that obdgpslogger is still relatively in the realm of "some-linux-knowledge-required", and I really appreciate your time when things don't immediately magically work.
Gary - you have better customer support than some commercial software companies. At this point I appreciate any help in getting this obd2 software to work on my ubuntu box.

I ran the code you suggested:

    Code:

... lots of good stuff , edited for space ...

    Checked out revision 329.
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ mkdir -p obgpslogger-trunk/build && cd obgpslogger-trunk/build
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obgpslogger-trunk/build$ cmake ..
CMake Error: The source directory "/home/unsung/obgpslogger-trunk" does not appear to contain CMakeLists.txt.
Specify --help for usage, or press the help button on the CMake GUI.
unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obgpslogger-trunk/build$ make && sudo make install
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obgpslogger-trunk/build$
    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obgpslogger-trunk/build$ obdftdipty --help
    Usage: obdftdipty [params]
       [-c|--modifyconf]
       [-d|--daemonise]
       [-b|--baud <number>]
       [-v|--version] [-h|--help]
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obgpslogger-trunk/build$

    Erm, that's fairly strange.

Can you look at the top level checkout [obdgpslogger-trunk] and tell me what's in there? It should contain a similar list to what you see here: http://svn.icculus.org/obdgpslogger/trunk/

At a guess, I'd ask you check that you checked out exactly the right url [and didn't put a space in between obdgpslogger/ and trunk/]:
    Code:
    svn co svn://svn.icculus.org/obdgpslogger/trunk/ obdgpslogger-trunk

Sorry Gary, I am trying to follow along but I dont know what you mean by checkout obdslogger-trunk. Sounds like I will need to read up to get a better understanding which will take some time.

    I tried running your code:
    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ svn co svn://svn.icculus.org/obdgpslogger/trunk/ obdgpslogger-trunk
    Checked out revision 329.

Can you show me the output of "ls obdgpslogger-trunk" when run from your home directory?

And if there's some files in there [such as TODO, ChangeLog, and CMakeLists.txt], then cd into that directory, then
    Code:
    mkdir build; cd build
    cmake ..
    make

And what happened then? Did lots of stuff scroll by? Eventually after running make, you should find something called "obdftdipty" in ~/obdgpslogger-trunk/bin

ya, "make" worked in the previous step. After that a sudo make install....

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obdgpslogger-trunk/build$ sudo make install

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obdgpslogger-trunk/bin$ dir
obd2csv obd2kml obdftdipty obdgpslogger obdlogrepair obdsim

but, nothing when I run it:

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~/obdgpslogger-trunk/bin$ obdftdipty
Couldn't find any FTDI devices attached to system
so I went back and checked obdftdipty --help

    Code:
    Usage: obdftdipty [params]
       [-c|--modifyconf]
       [-d|--daemonise]
       [-b|--baud <number>]
       [-V|--vendorid <hex vendor id>]
       [-D|--deviceid <hex device id>]
       [-v|--version] [-h|--help]
so if I am understanding correctly, I now should have the ability to add my device as you stated before:

    Code:
    unsung@unsung-desktop:~$ sudo obdftdipty -V 0x0403 -D 0xCC4A
Found ftdi device with productid 0x0
obdftdipty successfully opened pty. Name: /dev/pts/1
Now back to the origional suggestion of using this as a symbolic link for wine ...let me know if i wrote this right:
    Code:
    ln -s /dev/pts/1 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1

At this point, I am making progress, but Evoscan in Wine is still not recognizing a USB port. I have tried unplugging/replugging, and rerunning "sudo obdftdipty -V 0x0403 -D 0xCC4A"

Looks right. I strongly feel it'd be worth your time trying to check that this stuff is working, by hand.

Run "screen /dev/pts/1", and then hit enter a couple times. Do ">" appear? Is so, type "ATZ" and see if it tells you stuff.

Evoscan in wine shouldn't be looking for a USB port, it should be looking for a serial port, COM1. Remember that by the time wine sees it, it's no different to any other serial port, not a USB device.
