gpsd opens the port to the gps receiver and then provides a socket server to clients who want to connect to gpsd. You connect to it like you would any other server: gpsd://127.0.0.1:[port].
It also sends all it's data over dbus in the form of signals which ngpsd subscribes to (and is thus able to display gps data in nghost).
I'm not sure what xport is.
Found another one. I'm using Capture which another guy on this forum made, it constantly records video from a webcam and lets the user select which encoding algorithm is used, framerate and also size of file before it stops and starts a new one.
xport is a windows software that "splits" the com port into multiple virtual com ports, so more than one app can use the GPS unit at the same time.Quote:

Edit: I should clarify. I use iGuidance 4. I don't know if the 2009 version works under Wine or not.
Is iGuidance and WINE the best choice for GPS in Linux?
I don't know if it's the best choice, but I'd say it's a good choice. iG is certainly more feature-rich than Navit.
Try it out yourself. Download VirtualBox from Sun (it's free). This will give you a virtual machine within Windows that you can then install any OS into. Install a Linux distro of your choice (Ubuntu, for example). Install Wine, if it doesn't come preinstalled (apt-get install wine). Put the CD in, browse to /media/cdrom and double-click the setup.exe (Wine automatically associates itself with .exe files). Or from the command line, just do "wine /media/cdrom/Setup.exe"
I'm actually in the process of evaluating nGhost within a VM now, to see if I want to get rid of RoadRunner in favor of nGhost. I may even port over my favorite RR skin (Elite Lite) to nGhost.

Oops, I just realized you're not the person who asked the original question. My apologies. You're definitely no Linux noob. I have Debian on a laptop, HTPC, firewall, and a server. But for some reason I chose Windows and RR for the car.
There are other choices out there but iguidance is generally the best choice to do it.
and to get a usb gps dongle to work you have to recompile the latest version

To get it to work with my USB GPS I had to recompile Wine using the comm.c file from release 0.9.22 into the 1.1.11 distribution.
I could see the NEMA data with any windows terminal application using a com port linked to my device (/dev/ttyACM0 in my case), but iGuidance would not detect the GPS. It has something to do with IOCTL mode that got removed from the comm.c file in the more recent versions of wine.
To display the street names properly I had to install ms core fonts (using Winetrick).
To get the sound to work I had to play around with TTS (text-to-speech) from Microsoft (had to install it).
your other choices are tango gps or maybe gpsdrive there might be others but thats all i can remember.
