just got this thought... sure not the first time....
Would it be hard to port Ride Runner to Linux if there is access to the source code?
i guess demands would be that the skins made for a win version should also work on linux... Of course those skins that have their own DLL in win would be more tricky...
and of course the plugins have to be ported too....
and to make it worse i'm not a programmer, just a guy with crazy ideas

Blessed are the "cracked" for it is they who let in the light.
maybe win people are afraid when word linux is used.... i can only see potential in RR on linux, faster boot etc... more stable... less load on the pc etc...

That's the thing. Porting VB6 is linux (If even possible) will most likely be much slower than it is in windows, hard to believe I know, more unstable due to the oddities with winapi that are done, and an assortment of other things. Like I said, the best idea is to just load the skins and plugins with an entirely new core (Like RR did for Mediawhatever?). It's been done, there was zero interest.
Not going to happen.
And TBH if you want a linux FE you really need to take the opportunity to do it from the ground up.
Unfortunately one of the stumbling blocks is navigation.
If and when a good navigation engine comes out that runs on linux, you might have a chance more people will actually try and develope for it.
BTW whatever happened to LinuxICE?
OpenMobile can run on Linux but as mentioned the problem right now is lack of navigation software. There is a few out there but they are lacking on the map part as most of them are crowd sourced maps.
Failure is not an option...

yeah just a shame.... but well *sigh* i know the navigation issue... i just spit up the money for sygic to have something decent

I decided to join a larger community were I could leverage more help. I was hoping meego ivi would eventually replace it but never had the time to really contribute to it because of my work situation. Now my work situation is much more aligned with what I'd like to see happen here for vehicle technology enthusiasts. Hopefully I will be able to influence something that will be useful to this community.
Is there still interest for a complete software OS in this community?
Former author of LinuxICE, nghost.
Current author of nobdy.
I think a OS built specifically for CarPC's would still be the holy grail.
But still the main issue with Linux is the navigation side.
