jbors, there are some really good kernel patches out there for reducing boot time. You can eliminate the loops-per-jiffy timing and you can eliminate the IDE scans.
Also, in our setup, we have almost everything in our kernel modular; and we load the modules from our app. We completely rewrote/customized linux's startup routine (init, etc).
We've been tweaking our kernel for a couple of years now. We removed the printk's, etc... But, we're not on the EPIA anymore. We're embedded now and we have a boot time of about 4 seconds. We have hardware suspend and when we can resume almost instantly (in like 2 seconds flat).
It's a pretty nice setup.
I'll give you some of the the patches that we have - you'll probably be able to shave a few hundred more milliseconds, maybe even a second or more

yo cb can u post more info about embedded linux and wut hardware do uuse with it? Im very much interested in it and would appreciate it if u could tell me more info and where could i find such files. I went to dashpc adntheir warez was epia, slackware, etc...Quote:

jbors, I have an Epia 5000 and am having trouble with the hibernate/suspend working, but really I'd like a fast boot time. I'm using mandrake 10.1 (2.6.8.1 kernel) but am fairly new to linux.
If it wouldn't take too long could you post the steps I'd need to take to build/compile this kernel conifg. I've followed some other HOW-TO build kernels but get stuck at certain points and they fail to load. Maybe cos I'm using the weird architecture of the Epia boards.
