Anybody use GNU/Linux on AMD 64?

Probably not in the car, but does anybody use an AMD64 distro? Ubuntu/Debian/etc.

(Still running 32-bit Debian on my Athlon 64; switching over *real soon*)

We have a development machine in the lab running unbuntu. Runs well. I wish I wasn't such a poor college kid so I could afford to buy a 64.

Well, I only got it last year - before that, I was running a PIII 500 for the *longest* damned time. The 64 feels good now!

Yes, I run Gentoo Linux on my Athon 64 3500+.

I have pretty much everything compiled as native AMD64. This is another reason I love Linux, 64bit Linux has been around for a while, Win XP x64 edition isn't even out yet.

Most programs run fine, you can even compile programs as 32bit if they have trouble. However, there are some cases where you cannot run a program under 64bit, regardless of the executable type. I have a 32bit chroot enviroment setup. When I need to run an app that has compatiblity problems (such as Wine, or the Shockwave plugin) I simply chroot into the 32bit and run the app from there. The great thing is that X forwarding works just fine between the two enviroments and I even set up small scripts for running these apps. It is just about seamless.

I'm running Gentoo with amd64. Works pretty good. There are some things I'd like to have though. Flash support requires a 32-bit mozilla (not too hard to do). Mplayer doesn't have support for proprietary codecs out there (mostly just a problem with quicktime/windows media). Other than that, it's good.

Just a note, Windows XP x64 edition is out as a beta. I have it installed but I haven't looked into it much. However, It did play several windows media files. Perhaps I can share the 64 bit versions of the codec dlls and they will work in players such as xine?

That is the idea that is on some people's minds. I just don't think they've been ported over yet.

I'm running SUSE 9.2 x86-64 on my Athlon 64 3000+. It runs great... a bit hard to compile things designed for 32bit sometimes, though.
