Im all for linux, but when it comes to GUI, its all about MS, they've just been doing it longer, faster, harder for years. Im not too sure about the slickest frontend on linux, i wouldnt doubt it as i can play like 7 movies on my nix box(same time) but 2 movies laggs my windows box, but that would have to take the intrest of some very very very talented programmers
You're absolutely correct (about the need for a great set of programmers to assist the linux space).
You are incorrect however, about the Microsoft value-add proposition. Using MSFT you're likely to spend too much on licensing fee's and you'll give too much power to users that _think_ they know what they're doing. That environment would be an absolute nightmare to support. You'd have every kid trying to get his fave game ported to CE; and he'd likely know just enough about Windows to be able to completely clobber it. Where-to-fore, he'd be keeping your support lines hot trying to get his system back to normal.
Anyway, using X adds a _ton_ (in linux terms) of overhead to the system. X.org is a bit of an upgrade, but the only realistic solution is direct framebuffer, or SDL code. I like SDL, but for portability purposes, we're developing on framebuffer using an open toolkit.
Even X on Framebuffer is slow (albeit not quite as slow as straight X on the rocks).
OK im not quite sure what your saying. I was saying that MS has it down when it comes to GUI. Its as easy to add a button to a form as it is to add video. Any idiot with sufficent knowledge of VB(like myself) can write a complex application with child-like code, that performs as well as if a expert wrote it. As for linux....i dunno, X is allready laggy, but if it could catch up to par with MS, that alone would make me switch completely to a Linux Desktop, instead of just a Linux Server.
P.S. The only advantage i notice of Linux X Windowing System, is its "terminal services" type features runs much faster than Windows.' But thats about it for GUI.
If you mean VNC, that service is available on most (all modern?) platforms.Quote:

I've been looking around for a minimal distro that I want to use as a base for my car system, but since I'm completely useless with linux I can seem to figure out how to get DirectFB running after having installed only the base Debian system :(.
Your best bet would probably be to edit the movix livecd for your needs. I believe it has directfb on there for a backend to mplayer. I may be wrong though...
