    xxxxBasic or Basicxxxx is bad. Hell, the name isn't even recognized in the Linux community

    I don't recognize that name.

    Seriously, who would go through the trouble of learning to use GNU/Linux, and not take the extra step of learning a useful tool like perl?

    Noobs - perl is a Good Thing™. Shell script if you must, C (or C++ ick!) when you can - but learn perl!

    python/gtk might be a good option

    python - yes, if you can get past its "elegant" syntax. I never liked it, myself - prefer the "jesus tapdancing christ what the fark is going on?" syntax of perl.

    gtk - for gui development, you'll need a toolkit of some sort. gtk is a good idea whether or not you use gnome; qt is (unfortunately) limited mostly to kde users/embedded (OZ, etc) users.

    true well without X how about ncurses? and can it load images? I was never clear on that.

    not in straight text mode. have to switch video mode & use svgalib or some such lib.
