Thread: Linux Frontends

Well, I am begging to see the results too.

You don't like it? Fix it. Can't fix it? Don't use linux. Code your own you master coder you, run it in windows, and be happy.

Why would I run it in Windows if I was a master coder? Contradictory much? Being able to write a full-size application is a qualification for running Linux? There are going to be some really disappointed people when I tell them this....

He can express his opinion all he wants but seriously...if you want to knock on linux...do it in the other parts of the forum not in the nix forum...

I'll excuse you, surely you were drunk when you posted this. Exactly which part of my post knocked on Linux. In fact, not only have I probably been using Linux for far far longer than you, I have also contributed more to the Linux community.

No no no, retarded because he thinks the FE on this site suck. No respect man. Probably has no idea about the time and energy and money involved in even making a crappy frontend like mine. Think of the thousands of hours and beers in FrodoPlayer, and he's still working on it every day. C'mon now. This is why I say he's retarded, any normal person can see this.

Time and energy in and of itself makes something not suck? I can't even begin to list the examples that contradict this. If anyone of you would quit whacking off about the current front ends and take a good, hard, critical look at them you would see that most are terminally flawed. FP, CF and RR are definitely the cream of the crop, but each has fatal flaws. If FP, CF or RR were commercial software you would all whine about how terrible they are and expect everything to be fixed for your $35.

I have respect for anybody who puts time and effort into anything. My roommate and his band practice and work their asses off, and I will absolutely not hesitate to tell him when a song or a show sucked. Why? Because if I tell him them a show didn't suck when it did, how is it supposed to get any better?

Also, the old "if you want something better, do it yourself" argument has grown incredibly tiresome. How many of you have *****ed about Windows? How many of you are writing an operating system? Quit your self-important whining. The front-ends on Linux suck, and will continue to suck until someone does something about it. You pretending its not true isn't doing it.

Now, you can toy w/ linux, mythtv w/o much commitment. ++You can keep configuration files inside a windows filesystem (hd, usb key, etc) when you get to something you like you can 'stamp' your setup onto an HD when you like --- or not.

It's all 'bout choices folks.

OK, I have been slow.. working on buying another car and work is getting in the way.

Slowly making progress.. will post when something is realy there.. having problems updating the graphics while in the app. the GPS interface and logging work, the cam works mostly.

greatguruncsu, I don't think I received your message.. if I did I responded to it. If you guys want I can post what I have? Also, I like your part of the country, was in DC the last few days and was in the Reston town center area last night.

meh, no biggie about the message...just thought I'd offer help if you want/need any with teh front end. I'm not a permanent resident of this area, but it is quite nice up here. I'm actually on an internship, but I head back to school (NC State, Go Pack!) at the end of May, so I'll have plenty of time if you need/want any help coding...

Posting what you have would be pretty cool too, or you could email it to me. I'm sure others would be interested in it though, so if you could get it hosted somewhere that'd be cool....

Currently my web server is down (hard drive failure), but if you give me a few days I'd be happy to host it...

OK, I think I'm about ready to give up on Pycar. It's really slowing me down getting it working, I had some weird localization problem with it, so I tried compiling Python from scratch instead of using the Debian package. Then when I went back to recompile pygame and the other required modules, all kinds of new problems. I'm sick of wrestling with compiling things.

I used MythTV for a year or so, so I like the idea of that for a frontend. But, it has no mouse support? That sucks. Touch screen support is a must for me. And of course I know 0 about coding, so I can't just write in some support. Anyone have other ideas?

If there is just one good skinner around, eboxy, eboxy, eboxy. Everything we need is there already including IR control, but the only skins that are available are for setop boxes instead of cars.
