well it looks like I was using the wrong cable the GPS. I have ordered a data cable and it should arrive soon. LOL, I will let you all know if it works with the right cable ;).

I am using the Garmin GPS-18 serial version. I modified the power adapter to run off the 5v rail of my PC instead of the cigarette lighter adapter. Works great under Linux.

just waiting for that near perfect GPS Linux solution and then it's Linux and no turning back...
Deluo USB device here, using GpsDrive. Works great, plug and play using SuSE 9.3.
