any info would be appreciated as iam new to linux
Actually you need to install WineOriginally Posted by Chief
The best "info" would be to pick a distro that is easy to use (check the distros thread) and then install it and fiddle for a bit.
TheLlama,
also has the linux touch screen driver been fixed
also was reading thread on xcar is that dead project now.....?
linspire i like as linux distro whats ur thoughts on it so many diffrent distros
also how would an xbox go with linux geentoo distro and wine for destinator
Chief
I'm not sure. The touchscreen driver is probably fixed. If not, I'm sure it is fixable since the source is right there (Hack it until it works on your hardware then create a patch incase you upgrade).Originally Posted by Chief
I do not use a touch screen nor do I use anyone else's frontends. So, someone else will have to help you with that one. XBox runs linux fairly well and gentoo runs just fine on it. I am unsure of running wine on the Xbox. It should run, but I can't guarantee it will perform as you wish.
There is no wrong one to use. I resently switch to Linuspire for my desktop and it runs fine. I have found it to be easier to use than some of the others, and it is nice having support options. The downside is that their hardware support is somewhat limited compaired some of the others, and Linspire is less likly to have all of the development tools you may need preinstalled. If you do go with Linspire I would definetlly pay the extra $20 and buy the CNR service. It is a HUGE time saver.Originally Posted by Chief
You can use Wine to run lots of Windows apps be aware that it is still in Alpha stage development so it is still very buggy. The only way to really know is to install in and see if it will let you install that app you want to try.Originally Posted by Chief
I'm actually getting ready to try this. I'm going to use Xebian instead of GentooX though, mainly because I know debian a lot better. I'm going to be using Wine to get iGuidance to work. Also, it appears I'll have to upgrade the kernel to get my USB -> Serial -> GPS working. Kernel 2.6.12 and up have drivers for it I guess. Same with wireless devices as far as I have read. I'm also going to try and get a touchscreen working with it. I'll start a thread on it when I jump into it, so watch for that within the next week or so.Originally Posted by Chief
I'm kinda wondering the same thing about the xbox, if it has enough system power to run Xebian smoothly with Wine. Cause an xbox is what? A 733mhz PIII/Celeron mix with 64mb Ram?
Before going too far down this road do you know for sure this app will run under wine? If so do all the features you need from it work?Originally Posted by Tidder
I use Wine for a couple of things and it is amazing they hav done as much as they have... Bug Wine is still bugy unreliable and very slow. I do not think 733Mhz is going to cut it.
