I'm curious if anyone has any reccommendations re laptops. I have a Pro-Star 888E that's wicked fast with a big 16" 1600x1200 native screen and two 80 GB HDs but aside from the impressive hardware it's a bit crappy. The inverter for the LCD died on me (fixed now but I had to work around a motherboard problem) among other small problems. Ranting aside I'm planning on buying a new laptop and handing down the Pro-Star to my wife to use around the house. Right now I'm really liking the Dell XPS.
What I absolutely need:
>= 1600x1200 native res screen, 16" or better
Big HD (maybe 2)
Price isn't an issue as long as it's say less than 4 grand. Size/weight aren't an issue either as I won't be packing it around on alot of flights and stuff. So far the only two makes that come close to what I'm looking for are Alienware and Dell. The custom gamer laptops are just too expensive. I like the P4M in the Dell too even though it's not quite as fast as the 3 GHz P4 in my Pro-Star because it eats batteries for lunch.
Sounds like you have already made a decision. I run an XPS @ work and I love it. Add the 3 yr onsite support and you cant go wrong.
Yes I definitely plan on getting the extended warranty regardless what I get. I'm not getting burned again :nutz:
Might want to check out the hp dv8000(?) I have the older zd7000, and absolutely love it. 1680x1050 17" widescreen, with brightview upgrade. It is without a doubt the nicest screen I've ever seen. Linux support is not too bad... the integrated card reader doesn't have drivers, and the power management is a little buggy (so my battery level never refreshes). But that's probably fixed in the 8000. Other than that everything works perfectly under Linux. Oh and price-wise it's pretty damn good too.
