    You almost have me convinced!

Alright, I am kinda on the edge of the linux pond about ready to dive in... I have one laptop running linux, (Ubuntu) but i have NO idea how to install applications without the Package Manager thing... I am a purebred windows user, (i like double click installers), and i am hessitant to switching to linux on a car pc. however, i have seen programs like GPS drive that look like they would accomplish the same thing like iGuidance would for like... free... So as tempting as it all is, I need some answers....

    1. Would I be able to use my sprint phone as a modem like I can with windows to gain internet connection in the car (via usb cable)

    2. is the GPS nav software really free or do i have to pay for maps....

    3. all the frontend software I saw wasn't really designed for in car use. Are there any TRUE car front ends for linux, or are they all PVR front ends converted to car use...

    4. How aggrovated would you all be if i was in here asking how to install this or that every 5 minutes

Thanks in advance for all the help,
    Eubey

Okay the phone im not sure of who makes it what modle is it (its possible to use the cell phone to connect if there are drivers for it)

most the GPS software i have seen gets their maps from like open maps or mapquest soo yes free heh

installing stuff without the packagemanager is a bit odd at first but if you read the readmes most of it goes ./configure;make;make install and its done

if you have a ton of valid questions that cant be awnsered with google or the manual we would help happily with our mighty army of extended knowledge and docs heh XD

as for the gui there is an interesting on on here, silver wolf, past that most of them are modled after PVRs with plugins but you can always make your own

haha looks like Gambas is VERY similar to visual basic, and actually a slight bit easier to make a frontend like application in. After like 5 minutes of messin around, i was very impressed. However, i am the type of person that starts projects that never seem to get finished

yep and there are some howtos here on how to do it.... its mostly just making sure you have all the drivers, and your settings correct (kinda like windows cept you have to compile most the drivers heh)
