Although no new modules have gotten started, a huge amount of behind the scenes stuff has gotten alot of cleanup and improvement. The database now uses MySQL, the audio is now OSS4 exclusive, and is overall about 3 or 4 times as fast with all the improvements and cleanup. The speech engine has gotten a bit of rework and works much better now too.

    Early alpha release almost ready

Okay the Audio Player and library and Video Player and library are complete. The other modules won't take nearly as much time with those two out of the way. I'll probably release the first alpha with several modules missing so at least some testing can be done while I'm coding the rest. I'm taking off on vacation at the end of this month so whatever is ready is what I'll release around that time.

Here is what you're going to need:

    libxine (latest version)
    libdvdcss (latest version)
    mysql v5.0+
    oss v4.0+
    libmad (latest version)
    id3lib (latest version)
    fftw3 (libfftw v3.0+)
    libsndfile (latest version)

You MUST install the OSS v4 RPMs or tarball from 4Front technologies. I won't change my mind about that. It is miles ahead of anything else and makes SW2 alot cooler than it would be otherwise.

Depending on how much gets done before the release, you're also going to need:

    libogg
    libvorbis
    libbzip2

libogg and libvorbis are obviously for OGG/Vorbis support, and bzip2 is going to be necessary for the skin library support (compressed skin libraries).

The default skin is for an 800x480 screen that most people are using. If your screen is larger or smaller you'll need to rework the default skin.

As the code stands right now Silverwolf2 is a fully functional MP3, DVD, DVD ISO and MPEG2 video player, so you when it's released later this month you can at least decide if you love it or hate it

If you don't have a touchscreen, the RF remote control that was built into v1.3 will be reimplemented in v2.0 just not in the alpha release.

Yes I took a very close look at JACK (several days in fact) but the documentation is very incomplete and in the end it was just as troublesome as alsa. OSS4 is simple, reliable, backwards compatible with older oss apps, and well documented.

I'm finishing up the skin library import code (the skin library module itself is done) and redoing my website so it will be released together with the website revamp in the coming weeks (I keep getting inundated with other stuff or it would be done by now).

    Os Oss4

The good news is, since yesterday, there's an Open Source version of OSS4.

It's not installed in my car right now but when it was it took about 15-20 seconds from hibernation - admittedly not ALWAYS reliable. About 60 seconds from cold boot. My numbers are kind of irrelevant now though, since Silverwolf2 is the multimedia app only, not the OS and everything else like the original.

I was planning on releasing the alpha today but that may or may not happen depending on how much I can get done today.

I wasn't sure where to post this but since it's an update I'll put it here:

Well as expected a few small bugs have been found in the Silverwolf2 alpha release but nothing major so far.

I'll try to get the updates that will include navigation support and the photo library modules completed before the end of next week since I'll be gone for a few weeks after that...

By the way I'm having a *#$%! of a time getting iGuidance with the CrossoverOffice demo or wine to recognize my comX (X being any of several I've tried) link to /dev/ttyUSB0. I know it's actually working because I can see the output in minicom just fine and gpsdrive works no problem. It's just iGuidance (or wine/CrossoverOffice) don't recognize it. Is there something besides the softlink to /dev/ttyUSB0 that needs to be done (and yes the pl2303 module is loaded - obviously or gpsd wouldn't work)? Any hints are appreciated!
