Hello. I have been looking around this thread and am very interested in getting Navit to work here in North America (I am in Canada). Has there been any progress on these maps? Also are the maps something I would need to buy or are there decent opensource maps available?
Open Street Maps are making lots of strides in the North American area. They are importing tiger data for the US (which btw, U.S. Census is redoing TIGER to make it more usable). OSM appears to have maps for my area at least (SLC area). Garmin maps are also supported as of 0.0.2
Exactly. OSM made some progress which can be checked on the map on their website.
About Garmin, the maps works now for display, but you can't search for your destination yet. But it's being worked on :)

kev000. Thanks for the information. They don't have OSM for my area so I don't think that is a viable solution yet. However, I did look into the Garmin maps and would probably get City Navigator North America as it is the most complete set of maps that they currently have.
I was just wondering if these maps would work, if they can be used on multiple systems (license wise), and if this is currently the best option for Linux GPS.

navit 0.1.1 that is available in the net, supports framebuffer. All that one needs to do is to change the graphics and gui to sdl and internal respectively in navit.xml. Then framebuffer should be enabled in the linux machine.
Forget about 0.1.1 it's very old. Best will be using svn daily version. Because everyday many bug's are being fixed.Quote:
