My system is a Dell SX260, 512MB RAM, 20GB HDD, P4 2 point something GHZ CPU. I'm on a wired network, but would like to go wireless, but can't figure out how to enable that.
Any ideas or pointers?

"Geek my ride" covers LinuxICE1. LinuxICE2 is a diffferent beast. After you run iceconfigure, reboot. Then you can run update and the rest of the apps. run icetouch to setup the touchscreen (i think that works, if not, file a bug and try /usr/local/eGalaxTouch/setup.sh). GPS is a known bug... gpsd has to be reconfigured, see the bug report for that. Internet button is set to use firefox, which isn\'t installed. There should be a bug filed for that as well.

Thanks for the report. You found possibly 2 bugs that I've overlooked. If you can file them on bugs.openice.org, i'll be able to knock them out when I get time again. Much appreciated!

My own report....

Installed the .iso into a Virtualbox setup. Having read this thread, I new to look for the install button under GTK (what a strange place to put it). Install followed a standard Ubuntu install, however, the 1st reboot locked up. 2nd reboot started up ok -- but I didn't get any of the pretty graphic and it took longer than I would have expected. Even though I had told it to login automatically it still dropped me off at a login screen when boot was finished. When I logged in, it started up X with icepanel(?) and nghost. Nghost ran fine at this point. Exiting Nghost leaves me at a black screen with what looks like a keyboard on the bottom and now way to start up anything else (ie: if I wanted to go to a terminal I could find a way to do that). I did find the app starter in NGhost to be solid -- I just don't use Ubuntu a lot, so I have to find what apps I am looking for.

That's all I have for the moment. Hopefully when I play with it this evening I can find a filemanager app && a terminal of some sort...

BTW: this uses NGhost 2.5, correct? So how does that relate to NGhost 3?

lock-ups aren't good... There is a bug related to nGhost's default skin not being quite configured for LinuxICE. When it does, hopefully you'll have a shutdown menu instead of nghost just exiting and leaving you with nothing :S.

LinuxICE2 does include nGhost 2.5. 2.5 is a major upgrade over 2.0.2 but it still has the same core. nGhost3 is a complete rewrite with new graphics engine, UI, everything... It's still in active development and there really isn't much to show besides a few demo's.

That said, Nextabyte, the company behind the upcoming "Drivn" OS for infotainment systems has rewritten icepanel (a' la icepanel3) to use the nGhost3 engine. It's looking good so far.

The unofficial target for the nGhost3 stuff is the OpenICE 2.0 platform and LinuxICE3. But don't expect that until sometime next year.

All the actual work is being stored either in the subversion repo's: sf.net/projects/nghost sf.net/projects/icepanel sf.net/projects/linuxice

Actual builds are being built and published on the linuxice.openice.org server (which is currently down :( ).

Kevin,

How much of the Alpha is dependant on the server being up? Right now, I can't run the configure application because it just hangs (most likely waiting for the server). End result:

1. I had to configure menu.1st to get the splashy screen to work (it was missing the vga=791 part)
2. I am missing 4 button that are displayed in your youtube video from the 1st post
3. No way to setup wireless connection
4. No way to setup the auto login (I'm sure there's a config file for it somewhere)

Any idea when the server will be back up?

Notes:

AutoLogin
-mingetty not included in alpha (noted in bug report), used it along with editing /etc/events.d/tty1
-Running the ice install script (it's in /usr/bin/) seems like it would fix the splash and login problems.

pulseaudio

this sets pulse up for system wide access
-- sudo mv /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio /root/
-- in /etc/default/pulseaudio:
PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=1

Needed to add user to pusle-access, pulse-rt, and possibly pulse (although pulse site said it's not necessary)

:bounce: "Those steps done, pulseaudio starts -- but can't play audio via mplayer (tested in a terminal)... Many "Failed to connect to server: connection refused" type errors. Along with a "Denied access to client with invalid autherization data" for extra measure." -- Fixed with above steps.

-Now must get it out SPDIF (will try following steps)

TouchScreen:

I am using an USB TS, using the usbtouchscreen driver does recognize my monitor and follows my finger around once I installed xserver-xorg-input-evtouch. Still need to edit xorg.conf file. This solution maybe better than using the eGalaxy drivers as they require compiling (not in deb form) and thus require a lot more things installed.

After all this Googling... Things worked mostly once I added the touchscreen section and realize I didn't need the cw option.

nscan doesn't seem to be working -- I have many mp3/ogg files in my music folder, yet none are showing up.
using 'nscan -l 4 -f " I get message that look standard and I get this:

EDT:INFO - server address: 0.0.0.0

which doesn't look right.... (Kev000 points out that this is fine)

Watch out for case in the /etc/nghost/nghost.conf file (ie: ~/music vs ~/Music). Is it Audio_extensions or Audioextensions? (Looks like it should be Audioextensions)

Looks like we got it going... I needed to add a 'sleep' command as nghost was starting (on my setup) faster than nscan could connect.

GPS :dance:
-Running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gpsd" (see bug report) seemed to get my usb gps reciever going. However, I don't know how to test this yet.
-had to look instructions on how to add maps to navit (using openstreetmaps)

I am going to have a single directory for all the maps (maybe a default /home/<user>/Maps directory to place all maps into. Then a default navit.xml could be placed in ~/.navit/.

Note that the bin-file and the map set both have to be enabled.

Done some basic testing and things look good. Only improvement would to see if gpsd can work with HAL.

-My wireless card seemed to require using the madwifi drivers... The start of my dependancy hell.

I am only getting the keyboard at the bottom left corner -- for a short period I had the arrow, music button, vol controls -- but they have all gone away :{

Suggestions for final product:
1. Automagically add user to pulse-access and pulse-rt groups
2. Fix case differences in config files and actual directories
3. Use USBTOUCHSCREEN modules instead of eGalaxy, as it's included in the default Ubuntu and looks as if it should support most setups out of the box (that still needs to be checked, but there is an active bug reporting site for it)
4. Include Firefox
5. Include LIRC
6. Make a default directory for Maps (to be used with navit)
7. add reconfiguring gps (ie: dpkg-reconfigure gpsd) to the setup script
8. Add standard Ubuntu system configuration tools into the NGhost Application menu

The installation shouldn't depend on the server. Configure will hang, there's a bug in the UI. The script actually works fine. mingetty is missing, i think there is a bug filed on that .

For wireless: we need to figure out how to use network manager without the gnome applet. Any suggestions would be great. One obvious one would be a task tray area plugin for icepanel.

are you a member of the "pulseaudio" group? I'll use your notes to help me correct pulseaudio. Thanks for that.

I usually debug nscan by running nscan -l4 -f -Lstdout &> logfile.txt or something like that. Look at the --help. you want log level 4, foreground mode, and stdout as your log facility. Pipe that to a file and paste her here.

The address of 0.0.0.0 is okay (localhost). make sure you are running nscan and nghost as the same user. Also check the nghost.conf to make sure the paths are spelled correctly. the "Audio_extensions" option needs to be spelled "extensions" not "extentions". I think that's corrected, but double check anyway.
