Don't upgrade to 9.10

There seems to be some breakage in the kernel 2.6.31 ftdi driver that ships with ubuntu 9.10. Until it is fixed, I don't recommend upgrading if you use any ftdi-based scantool.

It's worth noting that 9.10 is a bug-riddled crock and I'd urge you to hold off on upgrading for a while even after they get that fix in :-/

well, so far gpsd and obd will have issues in 9.10. So until those are both solved, I wouldn't upgrade. gpsd can be worked around, but obd is a deal breaker for me.

On the desktop tho, 9,10 is working okay (aside from the annoying pulseaudio issues).

Concrete list of "bugs that are impacting me right now but didn't exist in 9.04":

On my laptop:
1) FTDI doesn't work. Since that's pivotal to one of the only things I do with that computer, that's a problem.
Since people on this forum are talking about carputers, and ftdi impacts one-or-more of GPS and OBDII, that's a significant problem.
2) Shutdown doesn't. Instead, it gets partway through shutdown then panics. Then I have to hold down the powerbutton to make it power off
3) Mouse accessibility doesn't work. I need hold-down-left-mouse-button-for-right-click on this laptop, and it doesn't work.

On my desktop:
1) Keyboard and mouse input doesn't work
[although to be fair, that's partially a USB problem, but Vista and 9.04 can both handle it]
2) FTDI doesn't work

On other people's machines:
1) Display doesn't
2) According to trip [above in this thread], audio doesn't.

9.10 *is* more buggy than previous releases. I never had anything bad to say about 9.04, 8.10, or 8.04. Also, your cheesy "which is worse" google test:
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,770,000 for 9.04 problems. (0.25 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 3,880,000 for 9.10 problems. (0.43 seconds)

Well (here comes the obligatory IWFM post),

Not sure what problem exist with FTDI, cause it's working fine for me (using it for my USB-UIRT). Shutdown, well, shuts down. Sound works, didn't even have to turn pulseaudio off this time. And I surely have a display

I agree with Maheriano, every who ends up with issues says a release is the worst ever.... And I do have some issues (specifically touchscreen) -- I just expect some issues with every release of every OS.

BTW: the google search only suggest that more people are trying Ubuntu out.

I saw a post on the Ubuntu forums saying one of the updates last week for 9.1 actually removed some of the PulseAudio packages and broke it. Nobody knows why yet but they were saying not to upgrade. I haven't actually tested the AC3 on my desktop yet to see if it still works or not but I can if you want to know.

The problem is known, and being fixed in the next kernel update. It may not be manifesting for you, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

For myself, and trip, it means that OBDII will not work with LinuxICE/obdgpslogger. Demonstrably, on both our machines, OBDII is not working. Which is essentially a showstopping bug - the only thing I even use that laptop for is obdgpslogger development.

Heh, that is interesting. I had to reinstall pulseaudio last week because somehow it got removed. I thought it was very odd.

I've been running 9.10 since alpha 6 on my main production machine. I have a fair amount of tolerance for 9.10 because of all the post release issues I had to work around. Those things are expected though. But when i wiped it and started fresh, I was out a few days trying to get it to actually work. i torrented ubuntu twice and burned it 5 times, every time it had some sort of file corruption. Same thing with the live usb. Ubuntu wouldn't install for the life of me. I did manage to get kubuntu installed, but soon learned that the FOSS nvidia drivers don't like my card and would blow up the machine after a random amount of time. After installing the closed drivers, all that went away.

I think a lot of Chunky_Ks's problems are PPC arch specific, but they are still really annoying problems just like what I encountered. However, once you perform all the necessary workarounds, it works great!

Im not a linux guy but finally got around to upgrading to 9.10 on my linux test rig and I have to say wow! Maybe its been awhile since my last linux install (cant be more then 2-3months) but installation was actually a positive experience and overall it feels more responsive.
