messing with ice.. and getting frozen?

These are probably all nghost issues, would i be correct?

    Tales from a N00b:
so i've tried this on a few different laptops i have lieing around, because honestly i just assumed i was doing something wrong. But i seem to always get the same result.

    Situation #1: *worked around*
linuxice loads up fine from the livecd
I select an option (we'll say gps)
then when i try to go "home" nothing happens
when i close the window i get a screen that looks like the "network connection" icon really blown up.. and i lose the option to do anything except open the on screen keyboard, and the file manager. but no matter what when i close that window it goes back to this network configuration screen.

This behavior stopped once I installed it, AND ran the configuration.

After configuration the screen stays blank for a moment or two then reverts to the home screen.

Situation #2 *still looking for workaround*
after installing and running the config some screens will get hung in a state where you seem to be unable to return to the home screen.
I've had this happen on the gpsd plugin
as well as the apps section

in SOME cases you can open another app that has an "x" to close the window (navit/explorer) from the bottom bar and after closing the screen will auto refresh to the home screen. Other times I've noticed that I can then click the back button after closing the screen but it will not go "home" on it's own

If i click (what im guessing is the) next window button, you get back to that happy network window from above. with no way out that I've found as of yet.

There will be some updates soon that should fix many of those issues. To go home from any screen, you can click on the title bar and select "desktop". This is not very intuitive, but it works for now.

    If we are talking issues....

    1. For some reason when selecting a song there is a long delay between clicking on the song and that song start playing. So long, it becomes unclear if an input was accepted -- end result, once song starts you may have it *restart*

    2. The window boxes (ones with arrors point left or right) on icepanel don't seem to do anything... What are they for?

    3. In the beta version of nghost I could switch between music and navit without issue, however, now I am left with navit having an *x* on the top right corner and having to kill it in order to move back to music.

    Non issue questions:

    1. can you use the arrow keys (or something like it) to move from window to window?
    2. Is there a way to start songs up from where it stopped when nghost starts?

    Thanks

1 - I can't say that i've seen that. How fast is your hard drive? Does the selector move over the selected song?

2 - the window boxes should iterate through open windows, not nGhost. We changed the desktop mode in an update, we should probably switch it back

    3 - see #2

    1- yes, see #2

2 - yes, i want this also for my setup. I'll take some time this weekend and try to update nghost with this feature as i don't think it'll take too long.

    Merry Christmas!

So I tried the latest version... And still noted the same type of problems. Additionally, I don't think i communicated very well on the arrow key question.

I examined what was being output into xsession-errors file and noted the following *error*/strange messages:

    (1)EST:ERROR - gfxengine.cpp:loadSurface(212) - Unable to load: /usr/share/nghost/vistique//screens/images/bowtiess.png (no, this file doesn't exist)

I can post the full xsession-errors file if you desire.

When I was talking about using arrow keys, I meant could we use them to move amongst the button, list, or other window'd structure within nghost. I would like to use aa joystick like device to move through list or to select buttons. In the case I am referring to, the joystick would not act like a mouse -- it would just send a keyboard event (like a right arrow button being pushed).

I am using an SSD drive, so I don't think it's the hang up.

I would love to get this working, so please let me know what steps I need to take to troubleshoot this. Thanks

    Nasa

Oh... Bonus question. I have my touchscreen working, tested by interacting with gnome. But when I start up NGhost I can move the cursor around but the application doesn't recognize button presses. I figure it must be on my end, but I don't know where/what I should be looking for

Is there anything I should be looking at to resolve some of these issue? I really would appreciate any ideas.

ahh, i see what you mean now with arrow buttons. Not the arrow buttons on icepanel, but they keyboard. nGhost doesn't have support for key commands, and it probably won't for now. You can always make a simple script that reads the input from the joystick and sends nghost-cmd's to nghost to switch screens and do stuff... That could get pretty complicated though.

The errors above don't show anything critical. I'm not sure why it would be taking so long to start playing a song. I admit I haven't seen that behavior in my car with a normal hdd or my desktop(s). can you reproduce it on other machines?

I just pushed an update to nGhost that adds resume on restart: http://forums.openice.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=707

It's in the testing repo so don't try it on a production machine. Test it in a VM or on your desktop :P. I'll move it to the unstable repo when I make sure it doesn't crash LinuxICE.
