something tells me that splashy is to blame. I found a thread (can't find it now) earlier today that had the same symptoms. I'll mess around and see if splashy remains exist on the system.

I believe that is exactly right...cause I keep getting the following messages a few seconds after my usplash has started then drops to a shell... "(Re)generating splash steps for"....then "starting boot splash manager splashy".... then "/sbin/splashy: not found"

the solution is to edit /etc/init.d/usplash and comment out the "usplash_quit" and replace it with "usplash_down". I'm not sure if this works. nemocrk in the irc channel found this solution.

This did nothing as far as I can tell. I opened up synaptic and completely removed splashy(it wasn't listed as installed, but did it anyway). Now none of the previous messages appear...But it is still dropping to a shell right before the kernel gets to "setting preliminary keymap". When I shut down, it used to show my usplash with the progress bar going down...now it doesn't anymore! This is becoming a aggravating problem!! This problem was not present in the previous kernel. Other than that, no new problems have surfaced yet with the new kernel that weren't present in the previous one(Location: is nweather.py running?). It fixed my Internet autologon however so I don't have to enter my WEP key every time I login.

I think maybe the problem is its not installed(in the traditional way) that may be the problem. Yet there is no INSTALL script in the package. I installed the "so" using the startup manager. How do I get it to officially install without a script? In other words, how to get it to show up as installed by synaptic? Is there a way to make a INSTALL script for the "so" file?

    Thanks in advance!!!
