Questions from my first LinuxICE install.

I've watched almost all of the videos posted for LinuxICE, and after my install I feel like I'm missing something. However, I am sure that this can be attributed to my noob ignorance, which leads to my questions/concerns:

Note: I apologize in advance if some of this is mentioned/answered elsewhere.

    - What file formats are supported by ICE? Most of my music is in the itunes format(.m4a), and when I plugged in a usb key with some songs on it nothing is visible. I can see the song through the file manager, and I copied the file to the music folder(assuming that's where the library tab looks) and still nothing.

    - While in file manager I was able to open and play the file using mplayer. However, as mention in another post, pulseaudio defaulted to mute. I haven't tried the fix yet, so i'll edit when I do.

    - I tried inserting a cd, but when I select the cd tab the button animation flashes and nothing happens. I know the drive works because I used it to install.

    - The network manager indicates that I am connected via wire, but when I open the browser nothing loads.

    - Can the button size of the osk be enlarged? I have to use a stylus type on it.

-Also all of the setup stuff that was under apps has disappeared. Is that only available during install or can i get it back so I can recalibrate the touch screen?

    - I've seen videos of the driven app switcher and nGhost 3. Are either or both of those available, and how would I go about installing them?

    Thanks in advance,

Currently, you must reboot after adding songs for nghost to pick them up. We are working on a big improvement to how this works for nGhost 2.6 which we will toss out to the LinuxICE repo when its stable. Oh, also you'll want to add 'm4a' to the extensions list for audio in /etc/nghost/nghost.conf

the pulseaudio mute issue is solved in an update to 2.0 and is already installed in 2.0.1 (which will be released soon). If you drop to the command line and run 'sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' you should get it and a bunch of other bug fixes. alsa-utils is the packages that fixes it. you should also be able to update running ice-update from the apps menu, however, i think that there is a bug in ice-update currently (will be fixed in 2.0.1.

    - I tried inserting a cd, but when I select the cd tab the button animation flashes and nothing happens. I know the drive works because I used it to install.
I may have to look closer in this. I don't use cds... ever. I'll try to come up with a solution in a future update.

    - The network manager indicates that I am connected via wire, but when I open the browser nothing loads.
It may be the browser. Can you try to sudo apt-get install firefox

    - Can the button size of the osk be enlarged? I have to use a stylus type on it.
i'll look into changing the layout of matchbox-keyboard.

-Also all of the setup stuff that was under apps has disappeared. Is that only available during install or can i get it back so I can recalibrate the touch screen?
only the install option should have disappeared. icetouch, etc should still be there. Are the other apps showing up?

    - I've seen videos of the driven app switcher and nGhost 3. Are either or both of those available, and how would I go about installing them?
the nghost3 stuff won't run on stock LinuxICE2 unless you upgrade it to a ubuntu 9.10 base (run sudo update-manager -d). Alternatively, if your graphics card supports compiz, you can get the app switcher effect with a mod to icepanel's skin. I may be able to create a transitional package that does all this for you. Or at least document how to do it. I'll think of the best approach and work on it over the weekend.

    good luck!

Thanks a ton for you quick response! To answer your question, the only apps I see are the pulseaduio utilities, the root terminal, and one other thing, but I'm not in front of it right now.

Thinking about it now, I might be within a sub folder of apps. I'll check and post exactly what shows up when I look at it tonight.

So... I was running through some of the suggestions above and I think I killed this install. I ran the update commands and installed firefox(didn't get to test) and gedit then I rebooted. After that it keeps asking me to enter my user name and password indefinitely. I think it could have come from the update commands because, when running those, it asked if I wanted to keep my current version of some files or replace them with the maintainer's files. I replaced them, and I'm guessing it screwed up the auto login.

Anywho, I'll do the reinstall in the morning.

Also, I was right about being in a sub-menu. All of the apps were still there.

All the debs from 2.0.1 have been pushed to stable as of yesterday. an apt-get dist-upgrade should upgrade to 2.0.1. You'll have to manually install the linuxice kernel tho...

-still not recognizing .m4a files in on usb drive or in library
-nWeather not registering displaying correct location, and all fields are blank except the left most day (displays the correct day of the week)

Note: carbon web browser is now working

did you add m4a to your audio_extensions in nghost.conf?
and did you change weather.conf with your zip code?
