the psu for my pc has capacitors in it that hold enough charge during cranking. why don't you just wire your hdd and whatnot into your psu? i know mine has a few extra sata and floppy and regular 4 pin ones that i don't use. just use a miltimeter and wire them in, the hard drive runs off of 12 volts and the psu puts out 12 volts...

I'm not using my DC-DC converter in this case (which does as you described) purely because of location. I plan on having my media drive in my glovebox, while the carputer is located in the trunk. I did try running a long usb extension cable between the two, but my drive wasn't seen when I did that (it may be a bad cable, but I haven't got another one on hand to check if that's the case).

how long of a usb cable are we talking here? anything over like 9 feet or something requires an active usb cable. I attempted something of this sort with a usb camera and around 25 feet of wire. the camera was seen but could only produce the lowest resolution video. If you want power going to your usb drive during engine cranking your going to have another power source for it, whether it be a capacitor or another battery. I would go with the capacitor route or get a dc-dc power supply and rig it up.

I actually am using a DC-DC adapter, it's just powered via the ACC line.... I will have to see if I am motivated enough to rearrange my power lines and if that DC-DC adapter will work (it was giving me some issues before).

But that's down on my priority list, I have some other issues I am working on :

1. when I run certain apps icepanel covers the bottom half and the top half is hidden by the top bar -- end results, I can't kill the app (volume control is a prime example)

2. Talking volume control -- the volume applet doesn't show iec958(also known as spdif), only analog outputs. Since all my audio is routed via spdif, I don't have any sound right now.


I have other items I am also working on (just not realated to Linux).

2. what is a talking volume control? it sounds like your problem is with the volume app.

Specifically the dialog box that comes from the volume control applet

Sorry for the confusion -- *Talking* as in "Talking about...". And it's the same applet as what I was mentioning in point #1

icepanel2 really only works well with matchbox window manager. it's not setting the partial struts in X. I could port some code from icepanel3 to fix that but...

if only I can code in my sleep... The two workarounds for now are to either run matchbox or run icepanel3 (which is kinda buggy, but works). Or if you know how to code, backport the partial strut thingy from icepanel3 to libnghost/icepanel2 (don't recall where the window creation code is off the top of my head) and send me a patch .

I'm busy right now getting software ready for afkfest but rest assured I'm dreaming of icepanel4...
