When will the next LinuxICE be released?

I have decided to go with a Windows system for the time being(wipes tears from his eyes). I can get everything I need running perfect with ease. I do eventually want to come back to linuxICE, but only after a few issues have been fixed....


1)Navigation: Navit is just not ready for my purposes at this time...Gonna go with Garmin PC(navigation and ease of use is the main reason for my carpc).

2)Video: MPlayer locks up too much for me. No problems watching movies in Windows.

3)Sound: This issue here killed it for LinuxICE. I have no more time to fool with this. Ready to start showing off my system....can't without sound.

4)Touchscreen: Touchscreen drivers at this point do not work well in LinuxICE...at least on my machine(didn't buy a touchscreen just to look at, I want it to function.....works well under Windows.

Will play with it in a virtual machine on my system though......

I really love the interface, and in time LinuxICE will be the carpc OS of choice for most(myself included). Keep up the good work!!!

with all that you have listed as negatives for linuxice... its hard for me to understand why you want to use it at all in the first place. you then top it off by saying "I can get everything I need running [in windows] perfect with ease." yet youre crying because you have to use windows against your will. i dont get it? why is there such hate for windows... or is it just pure love for linux for some reason?

edit* and im only posting that because im in the process of trying to find a new FE (aka reading and testing for hours), so im just trying to reach out for info and opinions.

I think most people in this forum would agree with the following:

Windows is a desktop operating system that people have tweaked and jammed this square operating system in the round hole we call a car.

Linux is whatever you want it to be and when you are done tweaking and modifying it, you can share it with everyone else (maximum reuse of effort, lower cost, etc). LinuxICE was such an attempt.

LinuxICE was a small, fast and powerful distribution designed specifically for the car. It costs nothing and does a lot of the things that you would expect a carpc to do: music playback, navigation, obd-II, etc. It also was self updating to the latest and greatest software when that software becomes available. In theory, you take 10 minutes to install the OS and you have a working system out of the box. I made several videos showing my personal tests that proved this theory on specific hardware.

That said, LinuxICE had some fundamental flaws that kept it from being massively appealing to windows users:

1 - media scanning was problematic. This only effected a few users, but was still a pain to work around when it happened.
2 - Touchscreen required post-installation effort. It didn't work out of the box and people like locs4days had issues even with the post-installation process.
3 - Navigation wasn't competitive with existing windows solutions.

The other issues locs encountered where fixed in the 2.0.1 release (specifically sound). I was never able to reproduce any of his other issues (touchscreen always worked for me and I never experienced mplayer crashing/freezing).

Bottom line is, if it doesn't work out of the box for whatever reason on your hardware, it requires some knowledge of Linux to fix the problem. Windows users know the quirks and tricks to getting stuff to work on windows, but just like any new thing, all known tricks don't necessarily apply.

If you want more reasons why I think windows is a bad idea for the car, I can elaborate.

As for the future of LinuxICE, 2.0.1 is the final version. There are a few updates after that for download post-installation. In the future, we are converting our OpenICE components to work under the MeeGo flag. We've learned a lot from LinuxICE development and have solved many of the plaguing issues. Hopefully when the OpenICE stuff and MeeGo finish merging, we will have an excellent replacement for LinuxICE and a compelling solution for those people who are sick of reinstalling windows and all the effort that it takes to get even the basic carpc software up and going.

i am VERY interested in meego, and im glad to see people are picking up on it, but its just too early to use it. it doesnt do what i need/want it to do (yet).
i would love an OS thats purely dedicated to do only one thing - ICE. paired with an SSD, boot up time should be super fast, which is what is one of my top priorities (probably everyone else's too).
with that being said, im looking forward to the openice/meego merge. i hope it happens sooner than later.

Me too. The reason I'd prefer a Linux install is because of issues with viruses, which sooner or later is always a problem with windows(I have a connected PC). Touchscreen problems is the deal breaker for me. Navigation can be solved using wine fairly easy, but for the life of me I just can't get the touchscreen to work. If this ever gets solved, I will switch back gladly. Will be following its development. Maybe it has a lot to do with the fact that I use a VIA mobo!!! Tripzero has always been very helpful, but as long as my touchscreen won't work, I can't convert...period.
