Thread: novice M2-ATX question

    okay after some research, and finally spent the 26 dollars on the wiring diagram. i spliced the white switched wired to the acc wired in the steering column. Surprisingly nothing blow up and my car still starts..woohoo for me. Ran a wire straight from the car battery to the m2 unswitched, totally bypassing the kill switch. checked on the connectors on the motherboard to make sure that the switched go 12 volts when the key was turned on and no voltage when the key was not turned. still can't get the carputer to turn on. bah.
    anything else i could possibly check?

    this is a weird one.
    now when you bench tested it, the m2 ran the computer fine right?

    yep sure did. The cabling from the m2 to the computer is the same as it was on the bench. Only difference is the hook up to the battery and to the acc, had the kill switch in there between the battery and the m2, but took that out of the equation as well. Ran straight from the car battery to the unswitched connector on the m2..i'm glad you think its rather odd...i was beginning to doubt what little skills i had..lol...well i think i'm going to pull everything out AGAIN..and try and bench it again just to make sure........

    When you pull it out, test to make sure it works again.

    Then remove your car battery and bring it inside and test off of that. Should give you a few minutes of power to test that it is wired to the battery correctly and works off of that. If not, then there is your problem (which would be weird btw). If that works, then with the battery removed, used a multimeter and measure the resistance between the two ends of the wire connected from the battery to the M2 constant. Should be low. If it is open line, then it is not connected somewhere (it broke or something). Then measure between that wire and the chassis. It should be open line. If you read any resistance at all, it is being shorted to ground (rubbed against metal maybe and now 12v constant is being directly shorted to ground).

    And we'll go from there.

    hey ya folks... okay so i suck but anyway..this is what i came up with..pulled everything out of the car..and benched it. Come to find out my atx cable the wire i'm suppose to ground..it came loose. So i repaired it, and everything works fine on the bench. Went ahead and put it back in the car. Wired everything up. Power goes to the computer and power goes to the TS, however..the computer does not power up, instead of giving me a blue light, annotating that everything is good and up, its giving me a orange light. Currently researching it right now. I checked the voltage from the switch and unswitched, and it read 12 volts from unswitched, and 13.87 from switched, too much voltage maybe?? anyway, i thought maybe i didn't ground it properly and found another wire to run my ground from the m2 board to the car. That didn't help cause now i'm pushing 6volts in my switched. Cracked open the steering column and checked the voltage from the acc wire i spliced into and with the key in its only giving me 6 volts.......ooops..what did i do??? So. went back to the wiring diagram and checked the two fuses they're connected to 7.5 amps each and both fuses are solid, no breaks. checked and double checked the wiring diagrams and just not seeing where i might have messed up so that i can get that acc wire to run 12 volts again. will see if i can copy the wiring diagram to show you. Anything else you think i might need to check?

    You are shorting out your car.

    My guess is that the new wire has too much resistance creating some kind of voltage divider. What 2k1Toaster suggested is a very good suggestion.

    okay went through and checked everything and found the short..not sure why it shorted, but safe to say no wire was exposed. so I did tear all the wiring in my car out, and reran all the wires. And got the acc wire in the ignition switch to get 12 volts again.

    Successfully got my computer up and running in my car.
