    Molex problem! Damn!

    Hi All,

So i have got advice from you and forum on how to power my lilli via molex.

using just the yellow wire and one ground, discard the red and one of the grounds.

So i went ahead and cut off one of the ends of a molex i had kicking around and then did the same to the lilliput cable stupidly without thinking! Now i dont know how i am going to work out which wire on the lilliput is ground and +ve, as i have no way of testing it! (because on one end is 2 bare wires the other is the plug to the lilliput!)

My question is on the wires is printing, one side has 1cm long whitish grey dashes, the other has small text, are the whitish dashes telling me its the ground wire?

what will happen if I try to plug it in and its wired wrong will it fry the screen?

Can i test the wiring by plugging it into my normal home pc, with a normal psu and molex?

Once again thank you for your help in advance!!

    you need a volt meter

usually, the dashed line indicates the positive wire-- this should go to the center terminal on the barrel connector. the solid black wire is typically negative and goes to the outside of the barrel connector.

but on expensive parts like the monitor, i always double check the correct polarity before connecting the screen.

when i did my screen, i cut the power cable, then plugged the cig lighter adapter in, so i could measure the wire with a volt meter, and verify which wire the dashed one was..

there should be a diagram showing centre pin polarity. Usually positive (99% of the time). So measure between wire A and the jacket of the jack vs the centre of the jack. One will give you an almost dead short (way less than an ohm) and the other will give you something very high in Kohm or Mohm regions. Or O.L. if your meter sucks.

or if you don't use a autoranging meter i prefer my non-autoranging meter over my autoranging one...

I love my autoranging Fluke. Accurate and easy. That and the beep on less than 1ohm button is pretty cool.

I've been using Fluke meters for 20 years - they rock.
