New Mac Portable Tablet - UMPC

    What do people think ?

Asus released there R2H, a Ultra Mobile PC, basically a supersized PalmPilot.

This i beleive will be something like apple's response.

Specs would be something as follows.

    1.3Ghz Core Duo
    1Gb SDRAM
    80Gb 1.8" HD
    BuiltIn GPS Unit
    8" Daylight Viewable WXVGA Touchscreen
    Stereo Speakers
    Webcam with Microphone
    Wifi 802.1g
    Bluetooth
    HDVI Display Out
    USB & FireWire Ports
    5.1 Channel Audio Out
    Multi Card Reader
    4-6Hours Battery Life

Its expected to run a cutdown version of OSX.

    That's a wetdream

Note if you cannot dream life will be dull

Otherwise from time to time you will need to make a dream happen otherwise life is dull

So Maybe you could ask Steve to make our dream reality

But again this is a big dream, what you really ought to dream is what Steve is going to dream about Now that would be news

    Back to point one

    A. The Asus product is a PC, not a Mac. There's lots of UMPC products out there. They have just as much to do with OS X as this product does.

    B. Most laptop/tablets aren't bright enough for in car use.

    C. A tablet is not impossible to install in a car but is very difficult to make look OEM.

    D. The rumor sites have covered this development, I'm sure. Let's keep it that way :-)

Microsoft's idea for the UMPC was to make pocket sized touch screen based devices that run windows and cost around $500. All its hardware making partners heard about this and say Wow, thats a fantastic idea... The engineers at thier partners said, ****, thats hard, we will just modify a few things... The management at thier partners said, hmm, great idea, lets triple that price... What they actually made was $1500 devices too big to fit in your pocket and barely able to run Vista. Meanwhile, we have Apple over hear saying we better get in on that **** too and they made a touch screen based device that costs around $500 and runs OS X. You may of heard of it, its called the iPhone. They in fact, have already made what one could consider the closest to Microsoft's original vision of the UMPC, aside from the fact it doesn't run microsoft products. For some reason, I don't see them going back and saying, "Oh our bad, I didn't realize you guys were going to do this like expensive and all slowly and stuff, we totally should triple the iPhone's price and make it 10 times larger."

Sorta true. I am using an IBM x41 tablet and, while the screen does fade a bit under DIRECT sunlight, as long as I have it mounted as i do (screen makes almost a 90 degree angle with the floor) - it's absolutely fine. only under very bright sunlight does this become a problem. I dont have a sunroof and im not sure how or if it would affect the screen but it may. i haven't had any issues with mine tho. just this past weekend, my girl took the tablet off the mount and put it on her lap - so the screen was facing upwards - the sun hit it and u couldn't see ****!!! that was the result of direct sunlight.

this is how my tablet looks mounted.

    - lol - damn - someone trying to use a tablet for an "OEM-ish" install? may god be with them.

I don't think the price comparison between the iPhone and the UMPS is quite fair. Though Apple has a great product on their hand (one that I want), it is far from being a computer. Yes is goes have google maps, media capabilities, and internet access, but the main drawback is that it will not be an open OS which mean you can not install anyhting on it. no one is goingto buy an iPhone to replace their laptop, while it would be possible to replace your laptop with a UMPC.

I'll most likely be buying the iPhone some time this year if there is word that other applications can be installed on it. It's not so revolutionary as people think. I have a Imate JAM Pocket PC from late 2004 that can do everything that the iPhone can do plus more. Only difference is that it's a bit bigger and the interface is not as smooth.

Anyways, back to the Table Mac, it will not happen for a while since that was what they set out to create, but instead came up with the iPhone. IGve them till 2010 and we might see somethign come put.

Good point! I figure it will take about 10 seconds for the iPhone to get hacked and then we'll see what people can do with it.

As for it not being very revolutionary, well the iPod wasn't the first, it wasn't the most capable and it wasn't the cheapest. But it did fit all the pieces together in a way that hadn't been done before.

Whether iPhone does that or not, we'll have to see. As for tablets, I think GodofCPU is right on, although I do think a pretty neat trick would be to make the iMac so you can just lift it right off of the stand and walk it into the living room to surf. Not a true portable but a couch-top PC.
